Alternative Plans for Coronation Night

Television is already unwatchable with wall to wall Bush inauguration coverage. So what ary your plans for tomorrow evening?

Unless I get a better idea, I think I'll watch the videotape I made of MTV's 1993 Inaugural Ball for Clinton. It opened with Don Henley singing "Dirty Laundry" and Leonard Cohen's "Democracy." ("Democracy is coming, to the U.S.A.") He also sang, if i recall correctly, Bob Dylan's "The Times, They Are a Changing."

Ok, so the last two were not great predictions. We can either say "wake me up in 2008" or "let's start working on 2006." I'll think about it tomorrow.

Meanwhile, check out some of the headlines of the foreign press. How's this for confidence in the direction our leader is taking us: World Fears New Bush Era. Here at home, Salon outlines 34 scandals of the first Bush Administration, "every one of them worse than Whitewater."

Why did the "Not One Dime" campaign not get any traction? That was the effort to urge people not spend any money anywhere on Jan 20 so as to protest Bush's Iraq War. It was passed around in emails, but I never saw any blogs efforts. JC

Listening to some Noam Chomski, Howard Zinn, & Arundhati Roy from Alternativeradio.org or ANYTHING to keep the fires burning. Still, it might do us some good to bear witness to these war criminals. They never like to be nailed down for the lies they spew, so we should really do our level best to keep track of them. You know, sort of like watching Reagan's funeral - you basically wanted to make sure the mother was really dead. Same rationale applies here. Stay angry!

An interesting sidenote to "Not One Damn Dime Day." It recently came to my attention that Stephen King is promoting it on his webpage. Check it out! (Here's an author whose fiction never forwarded anything quite so macabre as the Bush Administration)

You really didn't keep a 10 year old video tape around did you? What, did the cats enjoy sleeping on it? In any case, you didn't really just use the phrases "Clinton," "ball," and "Dirty Laundry" all at once, did you? -C

See David Mikkelson at Urban Legends for thoughts on "Not One Damn Dime Day". I've got tickets to Opera Pacific to see Le Nozze di Figaro for perhaps the fourth time, but Mozart never gets old. One day I may decide to sing along.

Re the songs in the second paragraph. There was, it had and it is. JC - Re Not a dime... Did you ever think about the millions of people who work in resturants, hotels and other retail establishments who would be sent home with no pay if no one showed up. Shame on you for expecting them to bear the brunt of your protest.

I'm hanging out in the secret Ivor Cave, playing with vintage stereo equipment and listening to vintage artists. In honor of hypocritical, undersexed Republicans everywhere, I'm going to play the Fugs LP "It Crawled into My Hand, Honest."

Ivor writes "I'd only feel sorry for the Democrats among them. The non-voters and Rethugs? Screw `em. They're the enemy." Typical. The Left again is willing to hurt their own, less fortunate people to make a point. "Into the breach shock troops! You exist only to make me feel righteous and superior!"

I'm leaving work early to go to Aqueduct to bet the ponies, them I'm going to the card club for some no-limit action. I figure if the nation is betting it's stake on a two-bit nag like GW Mush, I may as well let my bankroll ride.

And now for something completely different: What a great season it's been: 1. Red Sox win the World Series... 2. Bush wins presidency... 3. Good guys win House and Senate... 4. Daschle gets turfed out... 5. Rather gets turfed out... 6. Holidays... 7. Inauguration... 8. Pats beat Pittsburgh (...oops, that's Sunday...)

Most people I know that are participating in the "Not One Damn Dime Day" are getting what they need either the day before or day after. Even then, if I had a business that couldn't take a one day hit, I was probably having serios problems before that. I don't think the point of this is the actual boycott. I think it is to show we our united against Bush's policies.

Briefly tuned into MSGOP and immediately turned it off due to Chris Matthews being a total Republican ass kisser. He's factless and feckless and among those who continue to trash Kerry on a personal basis. Matthews relates to Bush because they are former drunks and Matthews thinks that is the test of a man --he is a clueless total a--h--- and NBC shows their true colors when they put him on as their face of the media coverage.

And let's remember under Bush the number of individuals especially children living in poverty, without affordable medical care, and without fully funded schools has increased. The reason we went to war as evaporated and now the Bushies are trying to make about the spread of Democracy. Only the most self absorbed among us can think this president as done a good job

If the IRS came up a few billion short, that would send a message. So, why not deduct your share of military funding from your income taxes this year. Simple civil disobedience. For 2005 there is something like $420 billion budgeted; assuming around 30million income tax payers for 2005, that would be $14,000 each. As a side note, this should give you a good idea of how much revenue comes from sales and other taxes, taxes from corporations and otherwise.

Well I am watching the new Fox show about the Daughter of the Devil. I assumed that Fox put it in conjunction with the coronation as a final acknowledgement of truth. Created by Marti Noxon, right hand woman of the creator of Buffy. Will be interesting to see how long it takes Fox to grind her talent into the dust.

It's pretty clear to me that the NODDD people have never run a business. Buying your stuff the day before or going to the 'raunt the day after won't affect payroll or anything else. I'm taking my wife out to Vin Rouge for her favorite steak and a nice glass of red - I figure most of the normal loons will be somewhere else. -C

Pigwiggle, I have often wondered how I could pull off a "HD Thoreau". But it's not like I "pay" taxes, Uncle Sam takes the loot before I ever see it. Do you know of a way of refusing to pay payroll deducted taxes? The only way I see I could perform civil disobedience is to start my own business or work off the books.

“Do you know of a way of refusing to pay payroll deducted taxes” I assume you can claim a bunch of deductions; just call payroll and tell them your claiming married and 6. Then payroll won’t hold much, if anything, out of your check. When you file you’ll find that you actually owe; deduct the 14K and ask for a refund. Add an extra box at the end of your return for the ‘I refuse to fund the military industrial complex’ deduction.

Doctor: It's nice to find some common ground with someone you've been sniping with for days, however trivial it may be. To that end: I admire your baseball taste immensely! The Sox victory last season meant fare more to many of us than it ought to have, but right or wrong, I was one of those who floated a few inches above ground for several weeks after their victory, as if something of true consequence had gone down.

Kdog- I suggest you don’t. Unlike, say the Shriners or your local Diocese, when you don’t make regular donations to the feds they come for you with guns and clubs. This is why food stamps, public housing, SS and so forth are hard to swallow as ‘charity’.

I tend to agree with those who question the Not One Dime Day: a) it is of little effectiveness, b) it may cause harm to those who are sympathetic, or not, and c) it does not represent a true sacrifice to buy stuff on a different day. Perhaps what is needed is a European-type general strike. A universal Sick Day, as in Sick of Bush’s War Mongering Day. Would Americans rouse themselves to participate in sufficient numbers to be effective? JC

Dearest No Name writes - "And let's remember under Bush the number of individuals especially children living in poverty, without affordable medical care, and without fully funded schools has increased." This is one of the natural laws of the universe, and has never been explained, although some of the more astute have noted that this always happens when a Repub is President. No one has yet explained why the actual numbers are always the same for both Demos and Repubs. DA - Are you really placing the protests against Bush on the same level as the struggle for civil rights? Please. That is sooooo funny. You can't be real. As to hours, it is merely my concern for your, and Paul's, health. Me being a warm caring person. kelite - Congrats on the status change of the BF. And remember, if the cat answers, don't believe a thing it tells you. jondee - The subject is not about what the Repubs care about. It is about what we now know the Demos care about. marc S writes - "Created by Marti Noxon, right hand woman of the creator of Buffy. Will be interesting to see how long it takes Fox to grind her talent into the dust." Oh how I wish someone would grind my talent into the dustn while paying me millions.

well, we refrained from watching the inaugural, but listened to coverage on npr instead. good times. my cat spent the evening trying to steal anything smaller that a pack of cigarettes and stuff them under the couch. she was very persistent, sneaky, and daring. i think she was trying to tell me something. of course, she is always like that. perhaps i am paranoid :)
