Hoax: U.S. Soldier Captured, Threatened With Beheading

Update: It appears to be a hoax and the photo on the website appears to be that of an action figure.

Bad news to report. A U.S. Soldier reportedly has been captured by Iraqi miltants and they are threatening to behead him.

The posting, on a Web site that frequently carried militants' statements, included a photo of what appeared to be an American soldier in desert fatigues seated with his hands tied behind his back. A gun barrel was pointed at his head, and he is seated in front of a black banner emblazoned with the Islamic profession of faith, "There is no god but God and Muhammad is His prophet."

The website suggests the group has killed other soldiers and currently is holding more.

“Our mujahedeen heroes of Iraq’s Jihadi Battalion were able to capture American military man John Adam after killing a number of his comrades and capturing the rest,” said the statement, signed by the “Mujahedeen Brigades.”

How many soliers are missing and for how long?

More than 180 foreigners have been kidnapped in the past year. At least 10 of them, including three American civilians, remain in the hands of their kidnappers. The only American soldier known to have been taken hostage is Pfc. Keith M. Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, who was shown in a video in April being held by militants.

The group claimed to have killed Maupin, but the U.S. could not confirm this. A spokesman today says the military is looking into today's claim.

    if true, all thoughts to the soldier(s) and families invovled. but, on the surface, this seems dubious to me. in the photo from the video, the soldier looks like a cpr dummy. has anyone seen the actual video? is this guy moving around?

    Check out Drudge. It just might be a G.I. Joe. If so, that would be pretty damn funny.

    Yeah, the "insurgents" did capture a GI Joe doll. The doll took out six of them before he was disabled.

    A few minutes ago, cnn.com briefly had a headline, "U.S. military: No soldier missing in Iraq", and before that, "Analyst raises doubts over abducted soldier claim". Both seem to have vanished. I didn't get a chance to read the articles.

    We can't authenticate the actual soldier, but the thrust of the story is accurate.

    It may be a hoax, but we know they wouldn't hurt any of our troops because we have foresworn placing pantnes on prisoners heads and other acts of torture.

    So PPJ & P, I assume you both laughed it off when the Bush administration complained about images of American POWs being shown off? And when they invoked the, oh what was it again? Oh, it was the Geneva convention!

    Daughter thinks her Barbie has been kidnapped. I'm hoping it does not meet the same fate. What does it say for the state of the insurgency if they are reduced to stupid tricks such as this?

    Web, No I laugh at the ignorance when people claimed we endanger our troops by not following the Geneva Convention because our soldiers will be treated harsher by our enemies....What's harsher than having you head cut off? and they were doing that before any of this prisoner abuse was public no? So quit while you're ahead. Of course I don't mind if the insurgents cut off the heads of 100's of GI Joes.

    Cliff: ROFLMAO. Patrick: It's not just this war we have to worry about, it's the next one. Suppose we end up in a war with one of the other 87 signatories (such as Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, or Pakistan). The world (especially this part of the world) has a long memory. Any one of those countries might interpret the US's behavior in Iraq (also one of the signatories) as an invitation to likewise ignore its commitment to basic human dignity in wartime.
