More Hunter Thompson Musings

The reminiscences and flashbacks for Hunter Thompson are flying around the web. Here are some sites, some articles, and some clips:

Conan: "You keep barrels of GUNPOWDER in your basement? What on earth for?"

HST: "Well, uh, em, to make bombs of course."

Conan: "You make bombs???"

HST (startled, looks around): "BOMBS??!! WHERE ??"

Aspen Daily News: Caption to the photo of Hunter at an anti-war rally at Aspen's Paepcke Park in 2003:

He told the crowd, "This president has destroyed the country, the economy, the relationship with the rest of the world. He's a monster in the White House. He should resign."

More:

Hunter was not only a national treasure, but the conscience of this little village," said Gerry Goldstein, a prominent Aspen attorney who is a dear friend of the Thompson family. "He kept us all honest. It didn't matter who you were, whether you were his friend or someone he didn't even know. He didn't mind grading your paper. He was righteous. He was part of a literary nobility."

Sorry. Seymour Hersh is a "national treasure." Amy Goodman is a "national treasure." Hunter Thompson? He may have been a writer who appealed to some (I wasn't one of them). As a journalist, I'm afraid he doesn't rate in my book. His attitude that the world revolved around him is, unfortunately, emblematic of what is wrong with far too many Americans.

Eli, you have a lot to learn about national treasures. And please don't speak ill of the dead, particluarly in my living room when I am eulogizing him. Show some respect, if not for HST, then for TalkLeft. Since you have nothing good to say, please scroll on by.

I'm not speaking ill of the dead (not that I think that when Reagan died, reminding people of all the evil he did was incorrect), I'm speaking ill of his reputation, which is what people who are living are thinking. Without trying to resort to flattery, I think YOU are more of a national treasure than Hunter Thompson was or is - one of the few outspoken defenders of the rights of the accused in this country. Not to mention a very informative blogger.

Not to mention a very informative blogger. A very informative blogger who is also eulogizing Hunter S. Thompson, a writer she has a profound respect for. ah, Eli, she asked you to scroll on by. Sometimes it is just better to remain silent. This might be one of those times.

Thanks, Eli for the compliment. It's very flattering and appreciated. But listen to Peaches on this one, ok? (spoken with a smile)

Instead giving Eli brush offs, give him something to chew on: [links deleted, they were not in html format and totally skewed the site, feel free to repost correctly, instructions are in comment box]

And to think I actually bit my tongue when Reagan died. I actually paid the man a compliment. I can see what the right's example of compassionate consevatism. Eli and BB and Ace are shining examples of the intolerant, crude, heartless, insensitive a******e that take advantage of an open forum, not to honor a well respected journalist, but to troll for attention. They've had their say. Now I say BAN THEM. IMHO.

Eli, if you have such low regard for HST, why are you even here? To specifically come to a gathering place (of sorts) for those who did think highly of HST is offensive to both his memory and, naturally, to his fans. All forms of art are very subjective. Every artist is 'appealing to some'... but not to all. Everything else that I so desperatly want to add was already stated quite nicely by Che's Lounge.
