Daily Kos notes that Kwesi Mfume has announced he will run for the Maryland Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Paul Sarbanes. He will make an excellent Senator, he was a terrific Congressman. The Washington Post reports,

Mfume, a Baltimore native, was elected to serve Maryland's 7th Congressional Distict in 1986. His decade in the U.S. House of Representatives included a stint as chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. He became president and chief executive officer of the NAACP in February 1996 and retired from that post at the end of last year.

Here's his platform statement:

He said his campaign would focus on "overcrowded and ill-equipped schools," health-care costs and disparities and fighting "low expectations" for some youths.

Like Kos, I'm a big Kwesi Mfume fan.

run kwesi, run! he's always seemed a smart, committed, passionate leader. but never too flash or self-conscious. i likes.

With Kos' record in the last election, ol' queesy should run away from any endorsement from him.

So, you gotta believe the local Republican party is having a h*ll of a Champaigne bash right now. Google that man for racist slurs and see what you come up with. Hint: Jew is a good search term. Can $harpton run for Hilary's senate seat next? -C

Posted by Wile E. coyote: "With Kos' record in the last election," Good point. Without legal recount rights, we can no longer trust ANY election results going on five years now. Mfume will need a landslide...shouldn't be too hard. He appears to be an excellent human being, and after living through this trash-at-the-top, people are hungry for real leaders to replace the vote-fraud tyrants. The rest of us want our recount rights back NOW. Boy, Wile, you really do know your stuff about what's wrong in America. Democracy lives and dies on the fairness of its elections.

Pual: Gotta agree with you. Queesy will win easily in Baltimore. Heck, he will be able to get his six kids and their six moms to vote for him and there is a sizable bloc right there.

As a citizen of Maryland, I'll be watching this one closely. If Mfume runs on the issue of ill-eqipped schools, he'll get a lot of traction, but if his only answer is the standard liberal mantra of more money, he'll find the going harder than he imagines. Taxes are already too high here and the general appearance is that lack of discipline and a solid curriculum is the problem, not lack of funding. If he can come up with something that speaks to what is really going on, he'll have a chance of getting my vote. Until then, he's just another political hack making promises he probably can't or won't keep.

cliff, so i googled and found stuff like this: NAACP President Kweise Mfume correctly suspended the head of his Dallas chapter for expressing concern about Lieberman's candidacy because Jews' "interest primarily has to do with money." hmm, must've been some other mfume.

Posted by dadler: "hmm, must've been some other mfume." No, Dadler, you just don't know how to read. Mfume correctly suspended Alcorn, the Dallas NAACP branch president, for making that statement. Here's your dunce cap; there's your stool.

Nope, maybe I'll wear it for awhile. Sorry, dadler, I guess I should have read Cliff's poison first. Hey, let's have the blacks and jews fight. None of the wingers will race forward to declare that attacking Mfume is racism. Too bad he isn't Latino.

paul, all good.

"Hey, let's have the blacks and jews fight." You are one sick person. God Bless you. Nicholas Smith
