Comments Now Require Registration

Bump and Update: In case you weren't around yesterday, and wonder what's going on here, you now need to register to comment on TalkLeft. From Friday:

Sometimes, all it takes is one person to ruin a good thing. Due to mass obscene comments by a single person this morning, all of which were directed at me or falsely claimed to be written by me, everyone will now have to register with TypeKey to post comments. Typekey provides answers to privacy concerns here. TalkLeft's webmaster, Mike Ditto, is setting this up now. Just click on the comments to any post to register. You can register with the same posting name you've always used.

Your first comment will require me to approve you. Once you are approved, your comments will automatically appear as before. I personally will be doing the approving, so if I'm offline when you make your first comment, it may not be instantaneous. I'm going to try to remain online through the weekend as much as possible.

You have to give typekey an email address to register, but it will not appear in the comments. Also, you have the choice of not having your email address forwarded to me. So, you can remain anonymous if you'd like. For those of you who allow your e-mail address to be forwarded to me, I will not share it with anyone else.

Update: Only two people have had a problem registering and posting comments. If you have a problem, try registering at Mike Ditto's site, so that we can determine if the problem stems from Typekey or TalkLeft.

Original Post:

There's a nasty troll on board today with multiple IP addresses. Comments are shut down until further notice.

I made a tech support thread over at my site, in case anyone experiences a fatal problem trying to post comments here. The toolbar is temporarily missing. No need to report that, I already know! :-)

TL- Thanks for all the work you put in (and you also Mr. Ditto, my firefox browser works very well); it’s appreciated. I saw one of the postings from the pernicious troll; crass and juvenile. Incidentally, this is the same setup that was used to ban me at BlogsForBush. I’m not sure how effective it is as I didn’t try to post after they asked me not to. I suppose someone intent on posting cold simply register multiple yahoo, hotmail, google, ect. email accounts and use them for the authentication. Making it just that more difficult should cut the bulk of the garbage though.

Testing one two three, testing. :) I've always been good. Then again, I'm real selective on what I comment on. Just making sure my typekey works here. And you know, it really is no trouble. So many require it, that I have my password memorized now.

I'm tempted to steal the old Groucho Marx line about any club which would have him as a member is one he wouldn't want to join. I see my Typekey password works here; I tried it at MT itself yesterday and it failed. Go figure.

I'm here. I'm not excited about the registration and extra steps to comment, but I'm here. Just another example of conservatives making my life harder when I'm trying to get away from them (visiting a left leaning news blog).

Really? Kos uses Typekey too? Neato! Sorry guys, I went and installed Mac OS X Tiger last night. Setting the relative coolness of it aside, the installer stinks. It failed in the middle of installation and I was left with a non-working machine until just a minute ago. I'll have a look at the problems now.

You might see the toolbar come and go for a bit. I'm suspecting there's a bug in my JavaScript that's causing the disappearing preview problem.

Nope, it wasn't the JavaScript. Yay! It was a parameter for the totally undocumented MTCommentFields tag. I love MovableType, but it has a real problem with these undocumented features. I wonder if they could use a tech writer...
