Uzbekistan, Torture, and Rendition

by TChris

The New York Times reports that there is "growing evidence that the United States has sent terror suspects to Uzbekistan for detention and interrogation" as part of the government's rendition program (background here). It appears that the United States transported dozens of prisoners to Uzbekistan.

While the Bush administration claims it has no reason to believe that foreign governments participating in the rendition program mistreat prisoners, that claim cannot credibly be made with regard to Uzbekistan. According to a State Department human rights report issued in 2001:

The police repeatedly tortured prisoners, State Department officials wrote, noting that the most common techniques were "beating, often with blunt weapons, and asphyxiation with a gas mask." Separately, international human rights groups had reported that torture in Uzbek jails included boiling of body parts, using electroshock on genitals and plucking off fingernails and toenails with pliers. Two prisoners were boiled to death, the groups reported. The February 2001 State Department report stated bluntly: "Uzbekistan is an authoritarian state with limited civil rights."

The decision to make Uzbekistan "a partner in the global fight against terrorism" reveals the administration's utter lack of concern for human rights.

Update (TL): Recent allegations have been made about wide scale forced sterilization in Uzbekistan, something rarely, if ever, reported in our national press.

These are war crimes. War crimes seem like high crimes and misdemeanors to me. History will not be kind to the country's decisions and leadership during these years. But like Arbusto stockholders, American citizens will be holding the bag when the war profiteers have retired with their loot. Social security reform anyone? You can trust these guys with your children and your money. What's the worst that could happen?

I don't there are any tyrants we would not befriend as long as we have identified a new bogeyman somewhere in the world that hates for us for our way of life. I am sure that's what is bugging Zarqawi. Too many microwaves, cellphones and ipods at large here in the west. Dubya finds Vlad Putin a lovable guy. The generalissimo in Pakistan is really ok, just misunderstood. Same with the Chinese. All oligarchs speak the same language in some ways. It transcends politics.

Well do any of you remember that was part of the old Red Empire? Torture, in that part of the world is normal place. Bush would love to see many Americans go to uzbekistan for a little fun and game's, just to see who is Watching inside our empire. remember ask where is bin laden?

Well how about hearing from the right-thinkers who hang here? Jim, what is your view on rendition to the Uzbek? What do your social liberal instincts tell you about this?

Bush's greatest legacy will be having transformed the richest, freest nation on earth into a banana republic which tortures its enemies, doesn't allow them trials or lawyers and is known world-wide for executing minors (until recently) and waging pre-emptive wars. This, all while America kills innocent civilians with smart bombs and shoot hostages at roadblocks and supports-no, opposes-no, supports Chalabi... Anyone else miss the Clinton days? Oh, Camelot...

Hey, Jim, should we be engaging in extraordinary rendition and sending the captives to Uzbekhistan? It's a simple yes or no question.
