The Import of the Downing Street Memos

David Corn, at the Nation:

All of this contradicts what Bush told Americans before the invasion of Iraq. He and his aides claimed that Iraq had reconstituted its nuclear weapons program, that Hussein was producing and stockpiling biological and chemical weapons, that Baghdad was in cahoots with al Qaeda, and that the intelligence obtained by the United States and other governments (presumably including the Brits) left "no doubt" that Iraq posed a direct WMD threat to the United States.

The British memos are further evidence that Bush overstated the main reasons for the war. They also show that his key line of defense is bunk. When confronted with questions about the lack of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Bush and his allies have consistently pointed to bad intelligence. But the previously released Downing Street memos and the new ones indicate that the Brits--who had access to the prewar intelligence--saw that the WMD case (based on that intelligence) was, as Jack Straw observed, weak. One might ask, why did they have such a different take than the one Bush shared with the public?

Yippee! It's about freakin' time! You Bush supporters are going to WISH all he did was let an intern blow him. I wish I was happier about being right.

Mfox, Are we the only ones up? That conference is the first time I have sensed some hope for a very long time. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) was incredible in the post conference meeting with the press. It's like for a brief moment we had a group of people rip open the facade and let a ray of reality sunshine hit our faces. There's no stopping this now. The truth is finally being exposed.

Che - thanks for the optimism that good will prevail. I am doing a lot of things to get involved locally. I just can't sit around typing and P.O.'d without doing sumthin. Sadly, I thought the Democrats were fighting the good fight and the "best man" was winning. A lot of local Dems have their heads up their collective butts, IMHO. I am having a hard time not dressing down a few local "voices of the people" lol.

Well keep up the struggle. I'm trying to get some medical supplies from some local hopitals that I would like to donate to a local father who's son was KIA 4/03 and flies over each christmas to deliver any materials he can collect to Iraqi refugees in Jordan. What I missed was that I was watching a bipartisan press conference that I commented on above. But it was actually about a resolution calling for a scheduled withdrawal from Iraq. So the ball is rolling.

Che- that's a great thing you're doing. I'm in Boston and if you email TL and ask them to forward your email to me, I would love to help with your Christmas project - we have Mass General, Shriver Burn Center, Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School to name just a few.] Sorry TL for off topic comment, but I'd love to figure out a way for Sudanese women to cook without leaving camps to gather firewood. If the technology exists and is cost effective, lets start sending them over. Any ideas, Che? : )

Please everyone, write to all of the media outlets you can. Tell them that it is their responsibility to bring this issue of deception in leading the American nation to war to the forefront of their reporting. This is impeachment material. It's time to stop the onslaught of mind-numbing celebrity gossip. Let tham know that we care, and that the dollars that we spend matter to them.
