Joe Biden to Run for Presidency in 2008

Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.) said on CBS's Face the Nation today he intends to run for President. (Crooks and Liars has the video.)

Democratic U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden said on Sunday he intends to run for president in 2008, two decades after he dropped out of the race amid charges he plagiarized a British politician's speech.... Biden campaigned for the 1988 Democratic nomination but withdrew early in the race after charges he plagiarized parts of a speech by British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock and exaggerated his academic record.

Joe Biden also brought us the Rave Act and has been a supporter of increased rights for law enforcement and wiretapping. He won't get our support. Here's his voting record on issues of import:

  • Voted YES on loosening restrictions on cell phone wiretapping. (Oct 2001)
  • Voted YES on prohibiting same-sex marriage. (Sep 1996)
  • Rated 60% by the ACLU, indicating a mixed civil rights voting record. (Dec 2002)
  • Rated 36% by NARAL, indicating a mixed voting record on abortion. (Dec 2003)

Biden also brought us this bill:

Biden's new bill would make it a federal felony to try and trick certain types of devices into playing your music or running your computer program. Breaking this law--even if it's to share music by your own garage band--could land you in prison for up to five years.

I just posted part of your reaction to the Biden declaration today , and linked to your post from, US Liberals at About.com. My belief is that he could have widespread appeal, and he will have my support, for his moderate stances. There are many other viable candidates too, though, such as Hillary.

He, or someone like him, will most likely become the democratic party candidate. This is precisely why I haven't voted for a democrat for president since 1988. So, will anyone good run? I fear the dems will back a lousy candidate even if the republicans have an all-time low approval rating- (like, even lower than now).

Thanks, Deborah. I'd just like to see the nomination go to a true progressive. I'm not much for centrists.

I will not vote alongside/in favor of any Democrat that subscribes to Conservative/Corporatist ideology. Neither will the phantom "swing voters". Conservatives will line up to tear Biden down in the same manner they would if Edward Kennedy were to run. The "Swift Vote Veterans for Lies" will be trolling around come '08 - alongside all of the other usual suspects - and it doesn't matter who is nominated.

The only way Biden would get my support is if he, through some bizarre series of events, is the last person standing after the primary season. Then, and only then, will I hold my nose and pull the lever.

TS - I don't think Biden was in the military, so that record should be safe.

Ahh, yes, the military factor, where a deserter is given precedence over a war hero with collusion of dat ol liberal press. Sheesh! The dems don't need anymore jomentum, and this jerk should have kept 'biden' his time.

Biden is a joke, he will do anything he is told to do by big business and by others who will pay to see him in the white house, his ideals are not good for anyone who wants to keep this nation as one. oh yes didn't biden also know saddam real well? and i know he is big on mexico and the mexican oligarcgies plans for the south west, and didn't he say something about the holocaust? and backed china nuclear games back in 1989? and we know he loves the ideals of open borders to keep down wages inside the empire, most of you will vote for him.

Biden's been making some good noise over Gitmo and the like, but that doesn't overshadow his past record in my books. Thats why I always say throw them all out and lets start fresh with people who are in no one's pocket.

I love it. Biden isn't liberal enough to suit the Democrat activists. With Dean as chairman and Durbin as second in command in the Senate, I'm confident the Dems will keep it up.

TalkLeft...That's cool. I like to present different and contrasting viewpoints at my About.com blog. I am centrist on some issues, decidedly progressive on others. I know Biden has lots of hurdles to the nomination, but I also see positives. My biggest problem with him is his stance on that horrible bankruptcy bill, and how he took campaign contributions from credit card lobbyists.

I agree, Fenria, let's get rid of these old fossils. They've been eating at the corporate banquet long enough. Deborah beat me to it on the bankruptcy bill. Anyone who voted for that, especially after taking money from the credit card companies, will never get my vote. Oops, never say never. Our options are getting thinner by the day, and I just can't stay out of that booth on election day. What to do? What to do?

He is one of the worst drug warriors in the Senate. He is so bad I'd rather vote for a moderate Republican than vote for him. If Biden takes the Democratic party nomination,I don't think I would be able to hold my nose and vote for him. I would be back to voting Green again.

Give him a pass on everything since and one despicable act continues to render Biden unsuitable for any responsible: When he refused to let the available witnesses testify, Joseph Biden gave us Clarence Thomas.

As requested, I thought this might be of interest: http://www.fed-soc.org/Publications/rbgjudnomconduct.pdf. This was in reference to Ginsburg's appearance. I too seem to remember something unpleasant about Biden from a previous campaign, does anyone remember the issue?

In general I grow increasingly tired of critical and abusive comments opposing political candidates. It would be much less divisive if we concentrated on the positive aspects of our candidate or issue. Not to mean we shouldn't be critical but it seems that the entire political process has become one of mud slinging. I would very much like to choose between several good candidates rather than have to choose the least bad of several bad candidates.
