Justice O'Connor a Liberal?

by TChris

Few would characterize Justice O'Connor as a liberal -- it might be a bit of a stretch even to label her a moderate, although the label fits when she's compared to some other members of the federal judiciary -- but she was too far to the left for Reverend Flip Benham, Director of Operation Save America, who is happy to see her go:

"Although we applaud her decision to step down and care for her ailing husband, her 'swing-vote' status on the Supreme Court over the issues of abortion and homosexual rights wrought more havoc upon our nation than our foreign enemies ever have."

All but branding Justice O'Connor as a terrorist is over the top, even for right wing extremists, but those are the folks President Bush will likely try to appease when he nominates her replacement. Frightening times lie ahead.

It gets even better after the quote TChris showed us:
Mrs. O'Connor betrayed the One who gave her breath – Almighty God. She betrayed the one who placed her in office – President Ronald Reagan. She betrayed the very document she was sworn to uphold – the Constitution. Finally, she betrayed our nation's children." When looking for a replacement for Judas the betrayer of Jesus, Peter said in Acts 1:20, "…it is written in the book of Psalms, 'May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,'" and, "May another take his place of leadership." Mr. President, please heed these words!
O'Connor is as bad as Judas? Yoiks! He crazy.

While I have no doubt this man is sincere in his beliefs, I still think he is a sick-O. What is even sicker is the number of wrong-wingers who will defend what he says... Congratulations wrong-wingers, it looks like your beloved boy-king "Uniter not a divider" is going to get his wish... A fundie regime.

"Where are the Libertarians when you need them?" Lobbying for more tax cuts, slamming the Department of Education in hopes of getting more tax cuts, looking the other way at the Green Police roundups which their votes made possible.....

Crooks & Liars has video of Darryn Kagen (Rush Limbaugh's girlfriend last I heard)talking to Judge Robert Bork - remember him? - who characterized O'Connor as an activist judge.

O'Conner betrayed her country and the Constitution when she assented to Bush v. Gore. Liberal/conservative isn't the issue. She violated the most basic separation of powers, and she did it because of her stated political views about the other candidate AT THE LEAST. Doing so, she put a junta into power. Co-conspirator or not, she is complicit.

Flip Benham is not talking religion but politics. He is engaged in a cynical ad hominem attack on a political opponent using the strongest rhetorical weapon he has: betrayal of Christ. Johnny is sure Benham is sincere in comparing O'Connor to Judas. I am absolutely sure he is not and Johnny is wrong. To give such people as Benham a pass on "sincerity" is to give them all the opening they need. He is sincere the way David Duke is sincere.
