Iraqi Torture Camps

The Observer has an article on the new type of Iraqi prison camps. Torture certainly didn't end with Saddam.

Secret torture chambers, the brutal interrogation of prisoners, murders by paramilitaries with links to powerful ministries... Foreign affairs editor Peter Beaumont in Baghdad uncovers a grim trail of abuse carried out by forces loyal to the new Iraqi Goverment.

No surprise here. John Negroponte has a long record of overseeing the set up of torture/death squads.

Hey, wasn't that another justification for war, along with WMD? Saddam torturing people, mass graves, chemical attacks, plastic shredder? The guy was another HITLER. "Now his own citizens won't be tortured anymore, yadda yadda".

Don't forget the rape rooms (not to be confused with American prisons, which are hilarious TV comedy fodder)

But, of course, it's ok when we do it, right? Well, of course, the #1 superpower can always employ a double standard...and if you don't like it, we'll call you a terrorist, torture and kill you. Stalin's got nothin on us....especially that choice bit about having the Iraqi security forces do our little Abu Ghraib style dirty work for us now so we can pretend to keep our hands nice and clean.

    From The Observer story:
What is most shocking is that it is done under the noses of US and UK officials, some of whom admit that they are aware of the abuses being perpetrated by units who are diverting international funding to their dirty war.

If officials admit they know, then they are responsible for putting an end to this. I'd like to know whether any of my tax dollars have been thrown in with that "International funding".
