Text of Karl Rove's Waiver to Cooper

Here is the text of Karl Rove's waiver to Matt Cooper, dated July 6, 2005. Luskin is correct that all it does is affirm that the prior general waiver Rove is valid. Cooper's lawyer is correct that it specifically states the waiver applies to Cooper. But it is not a new waiver, it's the same old waiver.

July 6, 2005

Dear Mr. Luskin:

This is to confirm our telephone conversation of this afternoon at 12:30 p.m. You have consulted with your client, Karl Rove, who has authorized you to represent to me and to my client, Matthew Cooper, the following statement: Consistent with his written waiver of confidentiality he previously executed, Mr. Rove affirms his waiver of any claim of confidentiality he may have concerning any conversation he may have had with Matthew Cooper of Time Magazine during the month of July, 2003.

When you receive a copy of this letter, please initial and fax back to me at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Richard Sauber

It seems to me Matthew Cooper was being a bit hyperbolic when he talked about receiving,

"in somewhat dramatic fashion" a direct personal communication from his source freeing him from his commitment to keep the source's identity secret.

It really just affirms he had been freed long before.

It is starting to look as if the Dems have overstated thier case about Rove and the Wilson/Plame deal. What he said seems to be a warning to the reporter as oppossed to an accusation to Cooper. I get the feeling that Rove has set the bait to prove his earlier point of Democratic bias in the media and it has been bait well set. There isn't a media outlet that hasn't tried to make this a big deal and even Carl Cameron from FOX tossed a feeble barb towards McClellen today so it is an equal opportunity goose-pile, sort of.... This is going to make the media and Dems look bad because of thier knee-jerk "gotcha" stance and seems to be another stroke of genius from the evil being the Left calls Rove. They would be better off letting this lay fallow as Wonkette has advised but it really is hard for lemmings to stop as they approach the cliff. If Rove is as cunning as some would believe then I am suprised that some would rise to his bait. Perhaps that "some" isn't as bright as they think they are. By the bye who is Judith Miller protecting anyways? The NYTimes or Karl Rove?

Gee ... Cooper? Melodramatic? As in, "to build up readership for the major article and/or book that's coming"? Can't be. Actually, most of the dramatic events in my own life have included correspondence containing the words "please initial and fax back to me at your earliest convenience."

Et al - The real point is that we now find out that Karl Rove signed a general release of "any person" in the December 03, January 04 time frame. That doesn't look like he was hiding anything, and Cooper looks foolish in his theatrics. And, as Luskin points out, Cooper burned Rove, as comparing his email and his article "A War On Wilson," shows. These two facts added together make Luskin comment that Miller called Rove to talk about health care, and then brought up the subject of WMD's. This shoots down my theory that Rove was angry about Wilson and was trying to do bad. Karl, you can have your job back.

luskin, rove's lawyer, stated that cooper 'burned' rove. If rove had already released him how could cooper have burned him? BTW, has anyone ever seen a lawyer act vigorously to defend his client? Even to the point of lying? I'm sure that has never happened before in america. [considering the willful ignorance of some on this site I feel compelled to point out that the preceding statement was sarcasm. In the future, I will merely add the acronym ISYFI as an addendum to similar posts.] These faint feints by admin apologists consist of the outpouring of watery gruel from the nether regions of the male offspring of cows.

Sailor; I don't do talking points, Left or Right. I'm just stunned by the feable and shall I say shallow, effite and self-comsumed attitude that certain precencts of the Left have become in the last six years. Stop your obsession with BUSH=HITLER/ Rove etc and plan for the future of your party. Hey I'll vote for anyone who skips polemic politics....so needless to say I rarely vote for the winner.

The CIA has asked the Justice Department to investigate allegations that the White House broke federal laws by revealing the identity of one of its undercover employees in retaliation against the woman's husband, a former ambassador who publicly criticized President Bush's since-discredited claim that Iraq had sought weapons-grade uranium from Africa, NBC News has learned. Jim, I believe the CIA disagrees with you. But of course, don't let the opinion of real patriots cloud your traitorous thinking.

I think it's on record that when the reporters got the waivers the first time, they both decided they were coerced and decided to ignore them.
This shoots down my theory that Rove was angry about Wilson and was trying to do bad. Karl, you can have your job back
A bit of common sense here, please. We know that at least 6 reporters were called about this and out of these, at least three (including Novak) were told about Wilson's wife. Still don't think this is a concerted effort? Isn't that something you would expect a seasoned journalist to extrapolate from all this?
This is going to make the media and Dems look bad because of thier knee-jerk "gotcha" stance and seems to be another stroke of genius from the evil being the Left calls Rove.
Pardon me, but this is just stupid. The CIA asks Justice to conduct an investigation. WH vehemently denys a top official is involved please note emphasis. Subsequently, we hear that's not the case, and that the said top official is not only involved, but one of the protagonists. Are you saying this is not news? That the media shouldn't ask questions? What has this got to do with the Dems? I mean what would you have them do? Ask the Justice department to ignore the CIA? What?

So now you can read my mind? Only the Left tries to convict based on what someone thinks. BTW - Be careful with that "traitorous" word. You may get people to start thinking about the ways "giving aid and comfort to the enemy" is being done now days.

That is exactly what people are starting to think about, PPJ, only maybe not in quite the same way you are.
