Gwinnett County,GA: Is There Something in the Water?

I'm a little Rove'd and Lexis'd out right now, so on to something different: Gwinnett County, Georgia. I think it must be the water. First, there was the Runaway Bride. Then there was this story about the police who tasered a handcuffed and foot-bound arrestee five times in 60 seconds, after which he died. Before that there was this story about really dumb school officials.

Now, there's this incredible story of a 60 year old man who was up to his eyeballs in medical debt and saw some tv news about bomber Eric Rudolph. He decided he envied Rudolph because the Government was going to be giving him three squares and a roof for the rest of his life. So he decided to copy him and kill a federal employee. He hatched his plan, and one day when the mailman arrived to deliver his mail, he shot him 7 times. Unbelievably, the mailman lived.

Two weeks ago, Crutchfield walked down his driveway carrying a .380-caliber pistol and greeted his mail carrier at the curb. He then opened fire on Lazenby, drove to the police station in his Chevrolet Cavalier and told the secretary, "I just shot the letter carrier."

"He took his mail and then said, 'Hello.' And then just started shooting," Lazenby said from his hospital bed Tuesday. "He just casually got in his car and drove away."

Crutchfield stuck to his plan in court:

At Crutchfield's first court appearance, he asked twice to plead guilty before even being assigned a public defender. "I'd like to get to where I'm going and start doing my time," he told the judge.

Things must be pretty bleak if "three hots and a cot" in a cage seems like a deal worth killing for.

In the water? No, it's in the black-eyed peas.

Being from Georgia I can say this. It's not the water. It's just the whole state. The further you get from Atlanta, the worse it gets.
