In addition to the useful questions suggested here to pose to John Roberts at his confirmation hearing, a NY Times editorial offers another useful question: If, as you claim, you've never been a member of the right wing's favorite legal organization, the Federalist Society, why were you "listed in a Federalist Society Lawyers' Division Leadership Directory for 1997-1998 as a member of the steering committee of the Washington chapter"?

    Good for Mr. Roberts if he joins the Federalist Society in the future. As for the past, apparently one does not have to be a member to be on the steering committee (which, I hear, never even met). No word yet on whether or not Roberts had simply tentatively agreed to help out in some way on the steering committee, agreed to help out in general and they put his name there, or if his name was put there completely by others w/out talking to him at all).

    How peculiar then that his exact excuses for not having to respond to questions are directly from a federalist society position paper! (warning:pdf) No one gets on the steering committee of the most important chapter of the fed soc w/o knowing about it. Who said they 'never met'? Gee, would it have been contained in the rnc talking points!? The man's a liar, and he got caught, but that make him perfectly qualified for bushco.

    Sailor, If he'd answered "yes, I have been a member of the Federalist Society," that would have been a lie, and you would be calling him a liar for saying yes, since he was never a member. How peculiar then that his exact excuses for not having to respond to questions are directly from a federalist society position paper! And how ironic that the paper is based on the precedent set by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. As it was for Ginsburg, so shall it be for Roberts. Clinton's nominee set the standard, matey, heartily endorsed at the time by Biden et al. Send him my kindest thanks, if you would :) [and btw, I still think that if John Roberts did decide to join the Federalist Society, he'd be a fine addition to a fine organization, tho I doubt he'll let the McCarthyite J'accusers of the Left influence his decision one way or the other]
