Karen Hughes Declines to Answer Plame Questions At Confirmation Hearing

Raw Story reports that Karen Hughes refused to answer John Kerry's questions about the outing of Valerie Plame during her confirmation hearing.

Kerry's line of questioning focused on whether Hughes knew Wilson was a covert operative, and whether she had ever spoken with Bush adviser Karl Rove about the agent.

Hughes response was curt: "Because of my ongoing contact with the White House, I was interviewed as part of that investigation and was happy to cooperate, as I noted in my Senate Foreign Relations Committee questionnaire. As you know, these questions relate to an ongoing criminal investigation. I believe that I should honor the prosecutor's request not to discuss this matter until he has completed his investigation."

I guess that's better than all the reports saying our guys didn't show. But we still could have gotten some video for those video intensive news organizations, no? With maybe EVERY DEM SENATOR asking the same question?!?

It seems to me Sen Kerry is scoring brownie points with the fringe and I think Hughs refusing to answer his question is just fine. It just adds to the whole conspiracy thingy.

"I think Hughs refusing to answer his question is just fine." Yeah, history has shown that completely unaccountable governments work out great.

I hope Kurt Russell plays her in the movie version.

Ahhh yes, the 'fringe' that included 48% of the vote. When does a subject of a Senate hearing go "I refuse to answer"? Take the 5th or answer the question! W(ho)TF does she think she is!? BYW, has anyone seen evidence that there is actually a "prosecutor's request not to discuss this matter?"

I can't wait to see how the Republicans honor Fitzgerald when Senator Roberts convenes his investigation into Fitzgerald's investigation. And if Robert's investigation into the actual Plame leak is a ruse to immunize Rove et.al., how is that respecting Fitzgerald? These people are unbelievable.

This week's Billboard GOP Top 10: 1. "Ongoing Investigation" 2. "Up or Down Vote" 3. "(Better to) Fight Them There Than Here" 4. "Culture of Life" 5. "(Freedom is) God's Gift to Humanity" 6. "Smoking Gun, Mushroom Cloud" 7. "Flip-Flopper" 8. "Gathering Threat" 9. "Axis of Evil" 10. "Soft Bigotry (of Low Expectations)"

Ah yes, Karen Hughes. Just one of all the President's men - and women.

When does a subject of a Senate hearing go "I refuse to answer"? Take the 5th or answer the question! W(ho)TF does she think she is!?
Ruth Bader Ginsburg refused to answer over 30 questions during her Senate hearing. Do you believe there should be a higher standard for Republicans? Apparently John Kerry missed the actual confirmation vote on Hughes so he could watch the Tour de France...so he must not have thought the issues in the hearing all that important. I know rants are a good way to release irrational steam, but you folks really should read the news first.

Can you tell the difference between answering questions about intentions and questions about events that have already taken place? Also there is no prohibition on stating what one's own testimony to the grand jury was.

Difference: 1) karen hughes is not a supreme court nominee. 2) RBG only refused to answer any questions concerning issues that were coming up before the court. 3) hughes refused to answer questions about her role in treason. 4) RBG was qualified for her job. KH is a political hack.

Kerry on the Fitzgerald becoming Special Prosecutor:
"Fitzgerald is a Bush appointee who carries the "same baggage as John Ashcroft. As usual, what the Bush Justice Department has done is a half measure and nowhere near good enough to restore public confidence in this tarnished agency," Kerry said.
Kerry's instincts on this are all wrong. This isn't BCCI or Iran-Contra. The simple fact is that Fitzgerald is the best hope this country has to expose the Bush lies while in office. If Fitzgerald brings no charges it's one more disappointment on top of a mountain of disappointments. But if Congressional Dems screw up his prosecution to score cheap political points then Dems deserve permanent minority status. I don't want to see Rove and Libby working in some GOP administration in 2012 like all the Iran-Contra hacks.
