Beware Immunity for Rove and Company

In the last month, three lawyers at TalkLeft (Last Night in Little Rock and Peter G (comments) and me) have warned about congressional hearings into RoveGate and the possibility that a la Oliver North, it might enable Bush administration wrongdoers to escape criminal liablility.

Crooks and Liars reports that today, Sen. Frank Lautenberg expressed a similar warning in this letter to the Republican chairmen of the House and Senate intelligence committees regarding hearings they plan to hold on Valerie Plame's outing.

In other RoveGate matters, read Digby on Novakula's tea leaves.

What I find most disturbing ...is not so much that Rove will likely be immune from prosecution. What else would you expect from this group? It's that the broad base of party supporters will follow without question and without conscience. That is what emboldens this administration to do what was previously unimaginable. Now that is what is truly scarey.

I read somewhere on the net, possibly this site (all roveing roads lead to TL), that the analogy with North does not fit here. There are several key differences between North and Rove. The main one I seem to remember is that Fitzgerald has much too much testimony already for retroactive immunity to take place for Rove et.al.. Also, because there has been little press on Fitzgeralds case until lately, Compared to Iran Contra, and there have been no leaks. I wish I could find the link, I will keep trying. Obviously I did not quite understand the point entirely. There are other lurking problems: presidential pardon problem, the doings in Chicago with removal of Comey, and no re appointment for Fitzgerald in Oct.

Furthermore, beware letting the Bolton appointment distract from keeping Rove and the other scum on the front burner.

This has always infuriated me; from WaPo via Digby:
Behind the scenes, the White House responded with twin attacks: one on Wilson and the other on the CIA, which it wanted to take the blame for allowing the 16 words to remain in Bush's speech.
And like the article, I also hope Fitzgerald is asking about "how the administration went about shifting responsibility" from themselves to the CIA. I'd love to see Tenet get some revenge. Maybe he already has, in his own way.
