Sen. Reid: Recovery to Cost $150 Billion

From a Statement by Sen. Minority Leader Harry Reid (received by e-mail.)

“The federal government has an enormous responsibility to provide relief to the survivors of this storm. We can and must do better than the federal government’s performance so far. Through my conversations with officials on the ground and in consultation with Senator Mary Landrieu, I believe that the recovery and relief operations will cost up to and could exceed $150 billion. FEMA alone will likely require $100 billion in additional funding.

“I want to make clear to the people of the Gulf States that we will continue to stand with you as the recovery continues, and do everything we can to get you the necessary resources you need to rebuild.”

we will continue to stand with you
Sounds like the very purpose of the Democratic party, very deep and as wide as the whole US of A. Now if we can get our reps at all levels as well as us here at the grass roots to recommit to this worthy purpose, the US of A shall rise once again, to fulfill its great potential.

Watch the bureaucratic knives come out: This will have to be paid for in an already overstretched economy, with a war that costs billions every week, while conducting a war on drugs at home that consumes 40 Billion annually. Let's see which Gub'mint agencies get sliced, and which ones get fat and sassy.

wishful - Gee, I almost stood up and signed a pledge card. Almost. et al - Okay. They get help. No discussion. Question is. Why should they get help to rebuild in an aread that can have the same thing happen again, next week? Repeat after me. If you build in a flood plain... you will be flooded. We need a new New Orleans.

PPJ, Six years of George Bush has lowered expectations and eroded the can-do spirit in this country. Flooding is not an insolvable problem. Engineers say that we can build a system in New Orleans that can withstand even a category 5 hurricane. This will be very expensive. The question is where are Republicans going to get the money. They have drained the government of funds by their war in Iraq and by their tax cuts for the wealthy. We can rebuild New Orleans if we get out of Iraq or if we rescind the tax cuts. We won't be able to do it if we continue to have war and tax cuts for the wealthy. Moving the location and building a "new" New Orleans will do what Katrina never was able to do. Katrina damaged the town bad but wasn't able to kill it.

Why should [we keep a deceitful liar of a president from whom we'll see] the same thing happen again, next week? Repeat after me. If you [vote for liars]... you will be [lied to].
