Same Sex Marriage Bill Passes in California Legislature

by Last Night in Little Rock

The California legislature today adopted a same sex marriage bill, making California the first state to adopt legislation authorizing gay marriage.

The legislation could be vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has expressed an acceptance of gay marriages but said it's an issue that should be decided by voters or the courts.

"He will uphold whatever the court decides," spokeswoman Margita Thompson said Tuesday after the state Assembly approved the same-sex marriage measure, 41-35. The Senate had approved it last week.

Update (TL): Gov. Arnold now says he will veto the bill.

It's a shame that Arnold is such a wuss. So now it will go to the courts. I have hope that the state Supreme Court will do the right thing. It recently handed down two rulings that were friendly in terms of recognizing same-sex relationshiops; one requiring businesses to give the same benefits to domestic partners that they give to married couples, and the other ruling that same sex partners with kids have to pay child support if they separate. Then of course there's the hypocrisy involved. Since when have conservatives wanted the courts to decide anything (except presidential elections). Sadly, this is another step towards putting civil rights and minority rights to a majority vote. If the trend continues, I'm afraid minorities in this country won't have anywhere to turn for justice.

Exactly, Terrance. When the state supreme court in MA ruled that the state's constitution required recognition of gay marriages, the conservatives screamed that this was a matter for the Legislature. It's almost funny that a conservative would complain that the resolution of a social controversy by the Legislature was inappropriate, and that the issue should be resolved by the Courts! In fact, the level of ignorance of basic knowledge about how democratic government functions that Schwarzenegger's comment reveals is mind-boggling. Can we get his citizenship/naturalization test paper regraded?

PG-Schwarzenegger's citizenship/naturalization test paper is off limits. It is privileged info that only the executive branch is entitled to see. If anything they will give him a higher grade, and use it to argue that foreign born citizens should be able to run for president.

Proof that steroids wither the nads. I'd call him a spineless girly man, but it would be a huge insult to the girly men I know.

His Hummer™ fad has really buttressed well with our soldiers' blood for oil. • He came here as an illegal immigrant (working on a tourist visa, not paying any taxes). • He bragged about screwing the victims of the Northridge quake on the Tonight Show. Ha-ha-ha. • He thinks it's funny to put a woman upside down into a toilet. So you think he's going to protect gay rights? • NOT LEGALLY ELECTED. He's a fraud.

The man himself, when he wagging something other than his veto finger:
"I didn't have time to take one girl out regularly and go through a normal high-school romance with all its phone calls and notes and squabbles. That took too much time. I needed to be in the gym. For me it was a simple matter of picking them up at the lake, and then never seeing them again.
It's important to avoid the sanctity of marriage, but just think: If you only have to see them for a single day, just imagine how much sanctity you can save up!
