Senate Kills Proposal For Independent Katrina Investigation

by TChris

Fifty-four Senate Republicans, evidently afraid of the truth, killed Sen. Hillary Clinton's proposal for an independent investigation of the governmental response to Hurricane Katrina. A public outcry for accountability didn't deter Senate Republicans from protecting the Bush administration from scrutiny.

The Senate vote is hardly likely to be the last word on whether to create an independent commission or as an alternative a special congressional committee to investigate Katrina. The 9/11 Commission was established in 2002 after resistance from Republicans and the White House, and opinion polls show the public strongly supports the idea. In a CNN/USA Today Gallup poll taken Sept. 8-11, 70 percent of those surveyed supported an independent panel to investigate the government's response to Katrina. Only 29 percent were opposed.

  • They are, as usual Circling the wagons. Lets face it there is no upside to an honest, fair and open investigation for the repigs. The question is will the Dems and the Country stand for it. If I had my way the Dems would Boycott and establish a fair and independant inquiry of their own in a Blue Stae with Supeana powers.

How unuuuusual! They (and every wingnut) have already proclaimed it was a local and state failure, why, oh why, would they be against an independent investigation!?

Why should they if they don't have to. They will only come out looking bad, so if forced they will rig it to their advantage like they did for the 9/11 hearings. The public just has to vote them out.

The support Bush & the Republican party have left now in the country is most likely their hard core base, and probably won't go much lower, if at all. They are trying to hold on to that base.

An "independent investigation" in Washington. Thats a good one. This should be in the Wednesday funny catagory.
