Atlanta Hostage Gave Gunman Meth

Ashley Smith has always said it was the power of faith that spared her from being the next victim of the Atlanta courthouse gunman who afterwards made his way into her apartment. Turns out, it might have been the power of meth.

Ashley Smith, the woman who says she persuaded suspected courthouse gunman Brian Nichols to release her by talking about her faith, discloses in a new book that she gave him methamphetamine during the hostage ordeal. Smith did not share that detail with authorities at the time. But investigators said she came clean about the drugs when they interviewed her months later. They said they have no plans to charge her with drug possession.

In her book, "Unlikely Angel," released Tuesday, Smith says Nichols had her bound on her bed with masking tape and an extension cord. She says he asked for marijuana, but she did not have any, and she dug into her illegal stash of crystal meth instead.

Smith says she stopped taking drugs the night before she encountered Nichols at her front door. If you remember, she had gone to a convenience store to get cigarettes at 2:30 am and when she returned to her apartment, Nichols accosted her and forced his way in.

Am I the only one who wonders if they did meth together that night? Not that it really matters.....

But kept a little around, um, to offer to intruders?

Hurray for Ashley Smith! She kept her head under pressure and saved her own life. Moreover, she did it without killing anyone, or without causing anyone else to get hurt later. We don't condemn Air Force pilots who take meth before going on combat missions, or ADHD sufferers who take a very similar drug so they can function in our modern sedentary society. Why should we condemn someone who uses it to get the edge she needs to survive a harrowing experience? (It was invented to be a diet drug). And, the connection between drugs and religion goes way back, in combination they can be powerful. Punish Meth users when it causes them to do something else bad. This hits the problem users just as hard.

I wonder how you dig into your marijuana stash with your hands bound with masking tape while tied to the bed?

Hey, I admire the woman, whatever gets you thru the night ... (and the next night, and the next day and the next ...;-) I loved the line (no pun intended;-) "But kept a little around, um, to offer to intruders?" Maybe she was just hoping to get a rise out of him!? Given a little time I'm sure they could prey for meth together. This could be a movie of the week because Hollywood has always been a fan of METHod acting;-) I'm sorry to inject a bit of levity into this serious subject, but maybe she was just blowing smoke, and hoping to distract him so she could take a powder! Thanks, I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your dealers!

Wow what a twist of fate. Still I hope she can kick the meth. That s**t will cook your brain, and it's really tough to control. She should get a free stay at a good rehab center for her success at saving her own life and possibly the lives of others.

Well, whatever gets her through the night I guess. She got out alive and the bad-guy is back in jail. What I will find it interesting to see how some of the Rightwing opinion folks will spin this one. They were big on pushing a moral angle to this story, sort of an evangelical theme and to find thier subject to be a person with feet of clay. I like this woman and I hope she really has quit doing meth as it is really nasty stuff.

I like my morality over easy, with a nice side of irony, thank you very much! I'm not much for the title though. How 'bout "Crystal Blue Persuasion"?

Let's see. She managed to get a killer to give up without a fight. No one got hurt. Okay. Let's make fun of her, and her religion.

But what about the children? I hope this woman gets prosecuted and sent away, she was using drugs! She is obviously a vile human being who belongs in a cage! Sarcasm aside, who cares if it was meth or candy bars, she got out alive.

kind of reminds me of half-baked "You know we sell this right?" - Dave Chapelle as Thurgood "That's too bad. I just stopped smokin yesterday." - Snoop as scavenger smoker.
