Wednesday Open Thread

The calendar says it's my birthday, so I'm off to do something different, like work out at the gym and go shoe-shopping. Here's a space for you - what's on your mind today?

This is why I have a little liberal torch burning for the Poker Player from Texas -- because deep in the recesses of that chilly heart is a man who adores Jeralyn (the woman who IS this site). We're wearing the same skin, James. As the Beatles sang on their last platter: "Come together, right now, over J". Also, as per usual, a link to energy freedom. Get off the gasoline habit for good.

Hey, kdog, just for fun, did you see the thread about the guy in LA who apparently held his 19 month old toddler up as a shield during a shootout with the cops and ended up getting both his daughter and himself killed? Anyway, it looks as though the guy may have been pretty coked up. It's not been proven yet, afaik, maybe the autopsy will tell for sure, but for the sake of argument let's say he was. Do you still think drug use is a victimless crime?

Re: Wednesday Open Thread (none / 0) (#38)
by Talkleft Visitor on Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 01:04:26 PM EST
SUO- There's one problem with your position. If some drunk kills someone (and that never happens...right?) , do you advocate the complete criminalization of alcohol? It would seem to be a logical conclusion of your line of reasoning. Drug and Alcohol use in moderation is a victimless crime. Excess leads to things like this.

SUO, see Adept's post, I agree 100%. Drug use is victimless, drug abuse is a different animal and may or may not lead to others being harmed. Notice prohibition did not prevent the lunatic in question (or anybody for that matter) from using drugs. There is no reason to punish me with arrest for the actions of a lunatic. In other news, a local county govt. does something useful for working people. Check it out, I'm shocked! Update, the bill passed 17-1 with bi-partisan support, which means there are enough votes to override a veto.

by sarcastic unnamed one on Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 01:04:28 PM EST
Adept, kdog, hold the phone guys, let's keep on topic - the claim that drug use is victimless. From your comment, kdog, it is apparent that you make a distinction between drug use and drug abuse. That sounds a little "it depends on what the definition of 'is' is" to me, since obviously a drug abuser is a drug user. If you insist that there is a distiction between the two, since that distinction is relatively un-obvious to the average joe, maybe you should qualify your declaration to "drug use in moderation is a victimless crime."?

by Talkleft Visitor on Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 01:04:28 PM EST
SUO- If you'll reread my post above, the one kdog agreed with, I believe you will see I've already said as much.
Drug and Alcohol use in moderation is a victimless crime. Excess leads to things like this.

Re: Wednesday Open Thread (none / 0) (#49)
by sarcastic unnamed one on Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 01:04:29 PM EST
Adept, funny, I read your's and kdog's posts and thought carefully about my response and didn't even realize the words I was typing were the same as your's! So I guess we agree that drug use is not a victimless crime, but that moderate drug use is. kdog?

Re: Wednesday Open Thread (none / 0) (#50)
by kdog on Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 01:04:29 PM EST
Agreed. Drug use in moderation is victimless. I guess in my head the term "drug use" implies moderation. Drug abuse is just that, abuse or over use. I guess where we digress is I believe not even all drug abusers victimize someone. Some do, usually a family member. As to the shooting being discussed, I don't know enough about the guy to say how much of a role the cocaine played. I'd guess he has severe mental problems, as well as a drug problem.

by Che's Lounge on Sat Dec 17, 2005 at 01:04:31 PM EST
SUO, Conversely I would ask if we should ban all activities that can conceivably result in individuals becoming victims (deaths or injuries resulting from said activities)?
