Mexico Abolishes Death Penalty

Mexico has abolished its death penalty. While no one has been executed there since 1961, the law was still on the books.

"Mexico shares the opinion that capital punishment is a violation of human rights," [Presidente]Fox said. "Today, the death penalty has been abolished."

Winds of Change. May they blow up north soon.

there's considerable winds of change blowing throughout latin america... today, chile goes to the polls to possible elect a female center-left candidate... 19 latin american countries representing 520 million people either have recently held or will hold elections with the next 18 months... mexico's election this coming july may very well see center-left candidate andres manuel lopez obrador (amlo) seated as president, an individual who would no doubt be more drawn to hugo chavez than george bush... and, yes, maybe the winds of change will start blowing from the south to help clear the noxious cloud that has enveloped our fair country... And, yes, I DO take it personally

Nice to know our neighbors to the North and South put more value on human life than our allegedly "Christian" nation.

Where's a rightie who says it's all a stunt by Mexico to make America look bad?

Dadler - here's one who will say it is a stunt, though not go as far as to say why. We talk here in TX about the Mexican Death Penalty. Sure, it's not state sponsored. It's a nod and a wink from the guards who dissappear for a while while the inmates take care of the problem of offenders who would have gotten the death penalty. I'd say a rose by any other name, but the practice in Mexico is far more cruel than it is here in the US, so perhaps Poison had it best... every rose has its thorn.

You can buy your way out of it in both countries. We pretend to be less corrupt, though.

Come on, Tex. What does it say that as wretched as the Mexican justice system appears, it still rejects state-sponsored murder...AND WE DON'T. That's a sad commentary.

When the headline reads: Mexico entices its citizens to stay there and help build that country up from a third world nation instead of encouraging them to slip under the fence and go to the US illegally. Then I'll be impressed!
