U.N. Inquiry Demands Closure of Guantanamo

A report due later this week by the U.N. Human Rights Commission is demanding the closure of Guantanamo and the prosecution of officials responsible for torture:

A United Nations inquiry has called for the immediate closure of America's Guantanamo Bay detention centre and the prosecution of officers and politicians "up to the highest level" who are accused of torturing detainees. The UN Human Rights Commission report, due to be published this week, concludes that Washington should put the 520 detainees on trial or release them.

It calls for the United States to halt all "practices amounting to torture", including the force-feeding of inmates who go on hunger strike.

Has anyone checked to see who makes up the membership of the UN Human Rights Commission? Perhaps Mugabe or Castro would care to speak on the human rights in thier own countries? Perhaps a spokesman for Syria or the Sudan? But then again I guess if anyone knows anything about the abuse of human rights it is these folks....

THE U.N. ?? LMAO... So what? They can't get out of their own way. Isn't it time you stopped worrying about what they think? If they did their job, we wouldn't be in Iraq now. Instead of blaming Bush...you should be blaming them. Ask them what they think about the Oil to Food deal....

Wow. Wonderful response, jimcee: who cares about the US's crimes against human rights if other countries are worse! However, jimcee's comment looks to the point next to BB's. Are there any Republicans out there who can say anything positive about the US gulags Bush is building, rather than just attacking either the UN or other countries at random? I mean, defend the policy of building an international web of secret prisons for prisoners to be held beyond the reach of justice? Or is the only thing you can find to say in response to this a horrified attack on someone, anyone, else?

Jersugilac, I did speak to the point. Those countries are on the UN Human Rights Council not just radomly chosen by me. If you don't understand the point than you are just not that well versed on the structure of the UN or the human rights record of those members. As far as you using terms such as Gulag I would hope that you would have even the slightist grasp of the magnitude of the Gulag that was run by the Soviets but alas either you are using silly hyperbole or you really don't understand. Please feel free to give me an honest analogy and not some cliche trope.

Posted by Jesurgislac February 14, 2006 02:05 PM Now, now, my friend, in keeping with your own logic, just because one is totally whacked doesn't mean the other knows what day it is. One has to love the way they continually bring up the Oil for Food Program when US fingerprints are all over it, Bremer still can't remember which pair of pants he left that missing 10 billion in and Halliburton squanders more before breakfast than Oil for Food ever dreamed of. And then there's the story they had on Iraq fraud on 60 Minutes the other night. You know, that Custer-Battles thing. Oil for Food wouldn't even constitute walkin' around money for those guys. You'd find more goin' through the sofa cushions.
