George and Dick: The Hunting Stories

by TChris

Will George and Dick soon be swapping hunting stories over a beer?

When George W. Bush, then a gubernatorial candidate, accidentally killed a protected [killdeer] during a dove shoot in 1994, he and his press aide swiftly decided on a strategy: confess fast.

"People watch the way you handle things. They get a feeling they like and trust you or they don't," said a biography of Mr Bush.

Dick should have called George for expert advice on hunting mishaps.

Dick Cheney: the rare politician who can make George Bush look good by comparison.

Actually, w killed a protected bird called a killdeer. I am a birdwatcher. I can't tell you how disgusted I am with the 'canned hunts' these guys put on.

The Cheney delay - This has sucked all the air from much more damaging news (to the administration and other repubs) ever since it happened. I wouldn't speculate that the shooting happened on purpose, but I would speculate that Karl Rove saw an opportunity to divert the media attention and advised Cheney to hold off and thereby seized that opportunity. Whether or not it was actually planned that way, it certainly worked to their undeserved advantage.

Now that is funny! A killdeer's a bird, TChris. To be fair, it's really someone else's mistake, but claiming he killed a deer with birdshot should have given you some pause...

If the press can't tell the difference between a bird and a deer, how can we expect Cheney to tell the difference between a bird and his friend's face?

There are many things about this situation that I have questions about. I know we all do. But one thing I haven't seen anyone ask is that if the shooting/accident was reported first to the white house without naming Cheney as the shooter, did anyone try to call him to find out more details. It was reported that Rove called and spoke with Katharine Armstrong, but didn't anyone try to contact Cheney himself? I am assuming that there is a hotline for him since he is, after all, only a heartbeat away from the presidency.

Deb, I imagine it went something like this. Hey, Scott. This is Dick. One of my hunting partners *hic* got peppered with a teensy bit of birdshot. We're not sure yet who shot him *COUGH COUGH COUGH COUGH COUGH* and maybe once we're *hic* relatively sure this geezer won't kick the bucket we'll all suddenly *hic* remember, I'm winking heavily but you can't see it. More info as soon as we're exposed.

Full transcript of Cheney interview Nobody does the milk toast interview better than Brit Hume. I know I could ask better questions than brit From the transcript "...I didn't see it at the time I shot, until after I'd fired. And the sun was directly behind him -- that affected the vision, too, I'm sure" (Dick Cheney). Aaron's follow up question -- Mr. vice president, in retrospect do you think it was a good idea to fire at a target going directly into the setting sun, where your visibility was impaired? Do you think that was an error in judgment on your part? As Alex mentioned on an earlier post, basic firearms safety. Before we let little Richard out to play with his guns again, I think he'd better take a refresher course.

I've got an idea, let's lock George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and the rest of the Bush administration in a room together with a few kegs of beer and a bunch of high-powered weapons. This would surely solve many of the global problems we have today.
