Technical Correction

by TChris

When Donald Rumsfeld said the Pentagon had stopped paying to plant favorable news stories in the Iraqi press, he meant to say that the Pentagon was thinking about stopping. His earlier statement was a lie mistaken and has been withdrawn.

According to Rumsfeld "... I was correctly informed. And I just misstated the facts" If someone mistates the facts after being correctly informed about what the facts are, then isn't that person lying?

Has PPJ been advising Rumsfeld on how to handle the press briefings?

"When we heard about it, we said, 'Gee, that's not what we ought to be doing,' " Rumsfeld said Friday during a taped interview on PBS' "The Charlie Rose Show." Rumsfeld said the contractor, Lincoln Group, and commanders in Iraq were notified of the Pentagon's concerns and ended the propaganda effort. "They stopped doing that," he said. [...] "Psy-ops is restricted by both [Defense Department] policy and executive order from targeting American audiences, our military personnel and news agencies or outlets," says the directive, dated Oct. 30, 2003, and signed by Rumsfeld.
At best it means the Secretary of Defense doesn't know that when he calls a halt to a program, and it doesn't happen, and he doesn't know about it, he's out of the loop. The SecDef is out of the loop and he's in charge of the Defense Department!?

    Update:
President Bush was unaware of the pending sale of shipping operations at six major U.S. seaports to a state-owned business in the United Arab Emirates until the deal already had been approved by his administration, the White House said Wednesday.
Is this their new defense!? We're so incompetent we don't know what we're doing ... but if you call us on it your helpin' the terrerists.

Sailor, You may be on to something. "I was correctly informed. I just mistated the facts." can apply to many other things that involved George W. For example, the buildup to the invasion of Iraq, and Bush's reaction to Katrina. The Bush administration's new mantra.

I know I am getting off topic but today the sh*t hit the fan in Iraq.

John Horse, I think you've just won the "Understatement of The Year" award. Favorable news stories about Iraq, indeed:
Iraq's political and religious leaders were engaged in a desperate effort last night to stop the country from sliding into civil war after a huge bomb shattered the golden-domed mosque in the city of Samarra, one of Shia Islam's most revered sites.
Way to go, George. If you'd just left the friggin' place alone maybe this wouldn't be happening. Ya think??? (sorry, George. Stupid question...)
