Mother's Day Open Thread

A happy Mother's Day to all from TalkLeft. I'm taking the day off from blogging, but here's a space for those of you online.

Since Mother's Day in the UK was a couple of months ago, I'm free of both 'pampering' from my children and obligations to my own mother - but Happy Mother's Day to all accross the pond! I was surprised to find that the news that only a single juror saved Moussaoui from the death penalty has not been discussed. Oscar touched on it in another thread, but I thought it best to expand in this open forum. I thought after reading this report that issues of intimidation from other jurors were raised but not addressed. It is a good point that in not knowing who the juror was who voted against the death penalty, the other jurors never got to debate with that person. But if faced with 11 people who I knew would not agree with me, I don't think I would have spoken up. Knowing that my vote would be enough to do the job of saving someone from execution, rightly or wrongly, I would have kept quiet and done my bit. I would be interested to hear anyone else's view on this.

What I thought interesting was that the holdout's identity was not known and refused to discusss the issue, just kept voting no. That smacks of jury nullification.

Bet the following two kids, or the mother, aren't have all that great of a Mother's Day. 6 Arrested in Sweep Near School By Arin Gencer The Los Angeles city attorney's office led a sweep this week that resulted in the arrests of six people, including a sex offender on probation, who lived near Crenshaw High School, city and school officials said Friday. and to thicken the plot: Releasing Inmates Early Has a Price By Jack Leonard, Megan Garvey and Doug Smith A shortage of jail beds puts career criminals back on the streets, where they often commit new offenses. Please note from the first story: "Denise Elliott, 40; LaCount Scott, 30; and George Whitehead, 42, were arrested on outstanding misdemeanor warrants. "Two children living with the three adults were taken into protective custody, said Tracy Webb, special assistant to the city attorney." So they put two children in protective custody to protect the kids at the high school?????? And when extrapolating from the second story, the 3 adults will be out in days no matter what their misdemeanor was. So what good did this do other maybe win a little publicity, for Jessica's Law, maybe? What harm did it do to the two children? Funnier still, the sex offender mentioned is not listed on the California Megan's law website. Maybe it was a misdemeanor statutory rape or something and they pulled it. Who knows?

Are you an American abroad? Are you an American citizen in need of guidance abroad? Business for Diplomatic Action, a US organisation, is launching a "World Citizens Guide" to aid the image of Americans abroad, following overwhelming demand from travelling businessmen. The guide, published online this week, offers tips including "Speak lower and slower. A loud voice is often perceived as bragging" and "Remember that your religion is not necessarily theirs".

HK: if faced with 11 people who I knew would not agree with me, I don't think I would have spoken up. Knowing that my vote would be enough to do the job of saving someone from execution, rightly or wrongly, I would have kept quiet and done my bit...I would be interested to hear anyone else's view on this. I agree with you on this HK, and might have done the same way - by using the secret ballot, if only to avoid listening to the whining that would have ensued, just to get it done without stretching out pointless arguing in the jury room, though I would have no hesitation discussing what I'd done publicly afterwards. Or depending on my mood, or if pushed, I'd have put my foot down and stated my position clearly right there to the rest in the room and said "I think you are wrong and my decision is final. Period". Even among only 11 others I think it is very hard for most people to stand against being made to feel like you must be wrong if all others are against you. Many people have a very difficult time saying no to anyone, particularly to a group that has them outnumbered alone in a room behind a locked door.

It's worth repeating from last year. Very sad that an apolitical thread was turned into a political thread. Is it so hard to agree taht we wish all mothers a happy mothrs day, and leave the animosity to another thread?

BigTex, I'm not sure which post you mean, but TalkLeft suggested I post that here. What kind of Mother's Day are those two kids having?

What makes you think that this thread is or should be apolitical? Try to answer that question without being political, I dare you.

Juan Cole has a reading list for anyone who wants to become informed about the mid-east, arabs, iranians et al. Perhaps our local specialist on the Moslem Character can fine tune his ignorance and satisfy his alleged thirst for historical knowledge by picking up a book or two on the subject. Juan Cole

HK: I wish I didn't have to know it was only one sensible juror, but, dang, I'm so glad for that one. Until more questions about that day are answered, and the laws of physics taken into account, no one should be on trial for it. When the prime suspects are stumping for the death penalty for some poor maniac... well... welcome to hell, jurors. Makes me crazy how easily manipulated by fear and prejudice people are, how our attention can be sucked away from hugely important issues by relatively trivial stuff.

How can you say Happy Mother's Day to a dear friend whose 18 year old son was murdered 24 days ago? You can't. In one of life's cruelest moments, a mother's aspirations for her oldest child, just graduating from high school, exploded with the gunshot that killed him. This Mother's Day is a time for extraordinary grieving for an extraordinary person. I've not lost a child, so I cannot assume to understand what she is going through. My heart is with her.

Happy Day, to all you who are Mothers. You're loving and fair above all others. Except when you rule, "Been years since you left school", "You should be married like your brother's?" feel bad about dropping the ball with the Joe Biden post. Mom will to that to my confidence. god bless'er.
