Sunday Night Comment Spats

We got quite a few visitors this weekend from far right weblogs critical of my Zarqawi and Guantanamo coverage. Commenters from these sites have come over here on the attack. They insult, call other commenters and liberals names and post multiple trashy comments with the intent of dominating the discussion. They also have riled up some of TalkLeft's regular ommenters who have begun to respond in kind. I don't have the time or the interest in playing traffic cop.

Deleting individual comments takes too long. What I've done is delete all comments for Sunday (and some from Saturday) -- both those of the unwelcome visitors and the TL commenters who stepped over the line. The most insulting and chattering of the righties have been banned.

Memo to all commenters: Keep it civil and lose the hostility and the name-calling. This is my site, not yours and it's going to be run on my terms, not yours. And don't lecture me on the First Amendment. I'm not the government.

Hard questions asked of Guantanamo; Zarqawi's death: A contrived show? These threads on TalkLeft, Not sadly bereft, Of propagandists & trolls...Jeralyn says go. straight shootin', TL...Al Swearengen himself couldn't have brought down a more swift hammer. on the subject of housekeeping, have you thought about a weekly Deadwood OT? Are you hip to it? Swearengen's cunning and brinksmanship makes Tony Soprano look like a rank amateur. the show itself is a brutal and fascinating comment on the politics of crime and corruption at the founding of the western states, and particularly the violent history of pure unbridled capitalism. even then. grist for the mill.

Your first responsibility is to the community of people who are part of the ongoing "conversation" at this site. Expecting people to show a minimum of respect for community members has nothing to do with the First Amendment...it has to do with human decency. Recently I've had to tell several commenters at my site to "get lost."

I believe that much of the reason that the so-right-their-wrong nuts vandalize liberal sites is that many of the right wing blogs do not allow for reader comments. So even if you wipe out some comments on this site, you still permit much broader communication than the right-wingers.

yahoo. well said to both parties! the point of comments, i think, should be stating strongly felt opinion, arguments pro and con,and counterarguments not games of verbal dominance. it aggravates me considerably when right wingers come to a site with the obvious intent of being disruptive of discourse, procede to say any preposterous thing that comes to mind to bait the well-intentioned commenters and then some of those commenters, in turn, begin an interminable verbal arm-wrestling match with the right wing sappers. this is a fool's game which i find intolerably tedious and which makes commenting a waste of time and no fun at all.

Edger - re organized troll comments I got the same feeling, too. A lot of the crap that was being posted was so long that it took entirely too much time to work up in the context of commenting. In other words, I think a lot of the trolls have some minions slaving away in a cubicle farm somewhere, churning out stuff (that's spelled c-r-a-p) that always seems to wind up blaming Clin-ton for all that The Unitary Decider has done. Then, I speculate, the trolls just cut and paste whatever they think they can get away with; there are very few who can think and type that quickly, especially while munching Cheetos. It's not that much different from Captain Jenks phony-phone-calling Larry King to make a Howard Stern comment/plug (to Larry's chagrin and the screener's pink slip), but it does seem organized.

Here is the Jason Leopold article dusty mentioned.

Re: Sunday Night Comment Spats (none / 0) (#33)
by scribe on Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 09:12:37 AM EST
I went over and read both Leopold's article and Marc Ash's article on 06cr0128. That's the docket number of the Sealed v. Sealed case Leopold's writing about. Ash is, as before, presenting a "What we know, what we believe" article, being very careful. Opinion: I don't think there's any way of knowing, absent access to the sealed papers themselves (which I don't have) what "Sealed v. Sealed" is all about. That the caption is abnormal is an accurate statement, but one comes across "Anonymous v. Anonymous" cases all the time in family and matrimonial courts. That "Sealed v. Sealed" bears a criminal ("cr") docket number is the only reason it has received any attention. I don't know how Leopold can support the contention it's a GJ indictment, other than thru his unnamed source. So, I guess we'll just have to wait on that. Moreover, the PACER would likely show something about any motion to partially unseal to show the putative defendant, so absent additional proof or sourcing, I'm agnostic on that. Conclusion: Maybe he's on to something (I'm inclined to believe that), but for now, it's just as likely to be pot-stirring on the day of a scheduling conference in the Libby case. All the cards are too close to the vests to say otherwise.

by squeaky on Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 09:13:52 AM EST
Leopold implies, just by way of publishing the new article, that the sealed v sealed case number "06 cr 128." is Rove's indictment. He does not spell it out, but given his now nototious Rove indictment piece, it is clearly implied.

IMO, there was nothing "fun" about what had been taking place in the comments section. In the past, I read the posts and the comments. Lately, I have been skipping the comments entirely. Not only were they valueless, but the detracted from the important job of shaking out the finer points. This type of behavior puts the site's at risk of becoming irrelevant. Please, don't let this happen.

Is there a tabulater somewhere that hands out cookies depending on how many times a commentator can manage to pejorativly mention "the Left" in their posts? One has to wonder when a person keeps posting The Left-should-realize-that-the Lefts-constant-attacks-only-prove-that-the Left-hates-Bush type of statements, which seem to point to the expression of some kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder, or a habitual passive-aggressivness that the commentator, through some egocentric sense of entitlement, feels justified in giving constant vent to. Either way, considering the fact that this is a left-leaning site, what it amounts to is a perpetual troll that will always eventually elicit a hostile responce particularly when the commentator is continually substituting heavy-handed loose defintions for the kind of analysis and discussion that the site seems to strive for.

The Left should-realize-that-the Lefts-hatred-for-Bush isnt a cogent, relevant comment of any kind, muddies and distracts from the discussion, and is an example of the kind of mob mentality that wants to substitute bumperstickers for thought.

OW: Funny you should mention "The Gong Show"; that movie "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" (about Chuck Barris) is on the tube currently - ran last night and I'm sure they;ll run it again, soon. I used to watch the Gong during my lunch break in college; f'g hilarious and amazing (in retrospect) that any of that got on network TV. Someone should just put reruns of that up (if only so we can listen to the Dobsons scream). Any idea whether any of that video has made it to the web?

I shall not watch it tonight but save save it for a rainy afternoon. I may even buy a bottle of rye whisky and wallow in nostalgia. It was 1974 when last I trod the soil of the North American continent. If you want a small tip; when you are visiting various web sites that show clips of whatever, copy and paste the host site of the video clip provider to a folder, there be no end of bits and bobs that you can search for. Enjoy.

There are a lot of sites and all they have to do is go from one to another and pick up information. One sides "talking points" is the other's learned comment. There does appear to be less and less room for those of us who are closer to the middle. And that I find sad. [remainder off topic and deleted]

I think that many of the trolls are so frightened of the current administration that they want to be documented as avid supporters to keep safe. I know a man, who is usually reasonable, who jumps through hoops to excuse the awfulness caused by these creeps; shrugs his shoulders, says every top civilization has done this and its our turn now, death toll be damned, and he's started living like there is no tomorrow, and forwarding really offensive right wing talking points... the latest being a big graphic that says "Why do I have to press one for English?" The stuff hits their email boxes within minutes of its creation and it doesn't take any longer than a day for the company line to be spread among those wishing to make points with the power elite. It's existential terror being poked daily that drives these people to come use their maladaptive coping mechanisms on us. They think becoming harder in their weakness is real strength. Put not too bright together with really scared, and you get Rabid Troll. There should be a therapy blog for them, and I am SO grateful this is not it. Thank you for sparing my nerves, Jeralyn.

Not enough, perhaps? ah yes, but my young ears would soon enough connect the dotsto learn of Count Basie from watching the ubiquitous "Gene-Gene, The Dancing Machine" make an appearance when things got slow. Trivia: Was he ever Gonged? as for Swearengen, i think he is almost as fun to watch as T. Soprano, and possibly smarter. the man is debauched beyond recognition, yet maintains a strong vigil over his holdings and interests. he would have made a fine senator. asked Jeralyn for a Deadwood OT...no reply as yet. perhaps we could begin a united front? onward...

That being said there does seem to be many here who will throw out the troll epithet when they are at a loss for a response. If you disagree with someone and you think you are correct then a good argument is so much better than trite invective whether the respondent is Con, Lib, libertarian or progressive. ppj - And what bizarre passive-aggressive instinct compels you to think you're taken seriously when you link to Powerline and NewsMax to explain every Rightie position (most) that you cant defend yourself?

"I think we (I) can write them off as another Leftie site" Oh and do tell us again how two time Medal of Honor winner Gen. Smedley Butler was "just another Leftie in the military" cuz he disagreed with you. Thats the kind of argumentation a person presents when they dont know what to think until they're told what to think.

Raoul. A show for the times; The "Gong Show" and trivia.
"Gene-Gene, The Dancing Machine" make an appearance when things got slow. Trivia: Was he ever Gonged?
Not at all at all. Given the "Professionalism" of the show he probably had another six jobs off camera.
what manner of stimulant are you in the throes of
    Moi?
the man is debauched beyond recognition, yet maintains a strong vigil over his holdings and interests. he would have made a fine senator.
I quite agree, we don't know that he doesn't.
been spending too much time among the Celestials?
Ah, the celestials, now doesn't that bring a little bit of scribbling to mind. Written in Northern English vernacular with a biteeen of the Irish thrown in. I hope Jeralyn will indulge me. TOWING A YOKE I got the job where most all jobs is got; in the pub. Would I ship aboard a trawler going to France, and tow a boat back. Giving it a bitteen of thought, and not wanting the sole company of two Other men, I says "If Herself can come, you're on" "It's a bit rough on board" says the skipper. "Sure she'll grand, not a problem" So off we sets, it were fair lumpy day, thought to me self I'm glad Herself's with me, at least we can keep the bunk warm. There's nothing much to do on those kind of jobs, it's all steaming. Skipper weren't up to much, he were a Kiwi, I think he'd Been to one of them antipodean charm schools, but that's another story. Next day, it were glorious, so we thought we'd soak up some rays. We dragged the mattresses up onto the foredeck, just in front of the wheelhouse, it were the only place you could sunbathe. Well Herself, not bein' one for false modesty, or bikini tops, Gets ragged off, and its tits out for the lads. Well I might be a bit biased, but she's a fair bonny lass, and I'm Sure lads in wheelhouse agreed wi' me. It must have made watch keeping a bit more interesting. In fact if it weren't for autopilot, I don't think boat would have ever got where It were s'posed to. But got there we did, and made ready the tow for next day. Well Herself had brought her glad rags, so we hit the town And got her lit. Herself with her long tanned legs n all glittery, she looked a million Dollars, and I felt like one. What's all this got to wi' stars? Well as the Manx say, "Tra d lor" it's a bit like manyana, only no where near as urgent, "Time enough" So off we sets back with this yoke in tow, now for them of you that Don't know what a yoke is, well it's a grand Irish word, and if you does a bit of writing , then it's a right handy one to have. A yoke is anything, a big yoke, a small yoke, a grand yoke altogether, You gets the idea. One crystal clear night, there's Herself and Himself, that's me, Sat on a couple of fish boxes on the blunt end off this old yoke We were sailing on. And there it were, in all it's glory, the Milky Way. It just blew us away, I just haven't got the words in me to describe it. It were like we were little atoms, no them little things inside 'em. Them neutrons or protons or what ever there called. We were speechless, it were a wonder we'll never forget. It were some time later, I couldn't get this sight out of me head. And then didn't a few little lines appear, just like magic, and them lines were these. Delight the night For hidden by day Delight the night We sailed the Milky Way Our chariot of rust and rattles Our space ship on the sea. (pasted from Microsoft Word.)

I think we can write them off as just another Leftie site
ppj's support of our troops turns out to be as bogus as his 'military experience'. Veterans want ppj's nutjob friend, Curt Weldon, to stop lying about Saddam's WMD's. Yes the same fake WMD's that got us into the war to begin with. Weldon, and ppj would gladly spill more american soldiers' blood just to boost the poll numbers of Bush, or help with the upcoming elections. Soldiers are just political props for these guys.
Sounds like this letter may have just as well been addressed to ppj.
He can join Weldon and Hitchens on a trip to Iraq to go find them. Weldon knows exactly where they are.
Congressmen Weldon stated if we go to Iraq and locate the WMD it would help with the upcoming election
link Chicken Hawk Weldon, who avoided the Vietnam War, and PPJ hate our troops and have contempt for veterans.

Well I do remember that the first expressed thought from Mr."Support the Troops" about the first group of young men who reportedly refused an order was "seventeen ropes for seventeen necks." Their support for the troops is about as substantial as their grasp of the concept of democracy.
