Katie Couric Debuts on CBS News Tonight

Katie Couric begins her nightly newscast at CBS this evening. I'm going to tivo it as I'll probably be at the jail when it airs and won't get to see it until I return home tomorrow.

For those of you who watch tonight, what did you think?

I hope it's a success. Break a leg, Katie.

A lot is riding on tonight's newscast. It isn't just a matter of whether she will win tonight or not - I feel she will - it is a matter of how much she wins and whether that lead will hold for more than a few days. Does she have the "authority" to beat out Brain and Charlie in the long run? We'll see. I, too, will be recording the program to see if she delivers on her plan to provide more perspective, to not only report the facts, but tell us what they mean, or at least what she or somebody else at CBS News thinks they mean.

You hope it's a success? The perky creep has invited Limbaugh on as a 1st week guest. He's an unrepentent lying drug addict. He spews some of the most vile, abusive, corrosive and divisive commentary across the airwaves you can find. Common decency dictates not giving him a forum beyond his own show. She swings a big bat so I can't believe he was foisted on her. If she's doing it for ratings she's even more craven than I thought. If it's not ratings but because she thinks he has something of value to contribute she's an idiot. Maybe it's both and she's a craven idiot. A twofer.

With what they're paying her, they could open bureaus in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and maybe, just maybe, Americans could hear some internatinal news coverage that doesn't involve the Middle East. I do not think I could possibly care less how she does.

TV news? Why bother? Over the last few years I have found that DKos has the best track record for accuracy of any source. Not that they do much original reporting, but because they sniff out and analyze news faster than any other group, and they are right more often than anyone on the web or elsewhere. Plus, they let me question them if I don't agree. When Bush lied with "16 words" in the 2003 SOTU speech, he was busted on DKos before he finished the speech. Like to see CBS match that.

CBS News invites viewers to suggest a sign-off line for Katie. I suggested "Good night, and may the good news be yours!" Perky enough?

I have for one have never "liked" the Half-pint pixie; wanted to vomit when she asked, then thanked "the media" for permitting her privacy when her husband died of cancer--while she is and was one of the first to chase the ambulance and invade other's with abrupt, insensitive questions concerning their private affairs. Who gives a crap about Katie Couric! Big deal...

Shes full of herself as usual. Lara Logan would have been a much finer choice.

But how'd she do? I've always liked Katie Couric and hope she does well. As for Rush, putting him on primetime does as much to help the Dems as putting on Michael Moore would help the republicans. Extremists are good for the base, but they're not exactly attractive to the voters in the middle that you need to win elections.

Please!!Katie Couric was just awful in the morning and did the worst interviews---she loves the righties and goes out of her way to be too cute by far. Will be a leg show with her personal brand of snide. Oh and her buddy Rush --how lovely. She really does need to be on ET-am sick of the lack of balanced news. This is a joke and can not beleive what they are paying her. Why not someone with brains?? Amy Goodman, and numerous others-oh forgot have to be a brainless twit for evening news.

I raced home to watch the newscast. I was not sure what to make of her. She was so perky (and the subject matter was always so shallow) on Today. But I decided to have an open mind and not prejudge her. And I liked her just fine. Let's remember that Dan Rather, the man she replaces, was not exactly the greatest anchor of the last century. She handled the job very professionally, reporting the serious news in an appropriatly serious tone. And the feature on "Free Speech" was just wonderful. To introduce it, she talked about how we should return to a time of civil discourse. What a nice thought, disagreeing with the critical views of another without demonizing and destroying them. We should have more of that. Sure, there will be people on that segment with whom we sharply disagree (like Mr Limbaugh?). But so what. There will be counter voices (like Bill Maher) who the right will take issue with. Maybe we can teach them some manners. Back to Ms. Couric. Fine start, I look forward with eager anticipation to future newscasts. Ane maybe some tough and thoughtful questions for the President tomorrow? Now that would be nice.

    From Media Matters, 12/19/05:
On the December 19 broadcast of NBC's Today, host Katie Couric asked NBC News Washington bureau chief Tim Russert whether the debate over the Bush administration's secret use of domestic surveillance without a warrant amounted to "legal analysts and constitutional scholars versus Americans, who say civil liberties are important, but we don't want another September 11." Russert responded, "Exactly right."
I've replayed the clip, by the way, and the comma after "Americans" is not a slanted transcription. She emphasized the word "Americans" and paused. "Break a leg, Katie"? I don't get it, Jeralyn. Why would anyone on the left be cheering Couric on?
