Convicted Lawyer Lynne Stewart Battling Cancer

Update: The New York Times has more here, with comments by Ms. Stewart.

TalkLeft's best wishes go out to criminal defense lawyer Lynne Stewart today. Ms. Stewart, 66, is scheduled to be sentenced next week following her conviction for providing material support to terrorists. In a letter to the Judge today, her lawyers advised she is battling breast cancer. She was diagnosed in November, and is undergoing radiation.

All of TalkLeft's coverage of Lynne Stewart's case is accessible here.

My views of the verdict are summarized here.

I would suggest a postponment in Ms Stewarts sentencing until she has undergone her treatments and is pronounced cured or terminal. If she is terminal then let her die in peace, if she becomes well she should be appropriatly sentenced for her conviction. If this is a ploy for sympathy and an avoidence of her sentencing then she should be sentenced to the maximum for her crime and then charged with fraud. I wish Ms Stewart the best in her illness, cancer sucks and the treatment is almost as bad. Either way the conviction came before the diagnosis so if she survives she should be prepared to be sentenced.

Her case was just the begining of the assult on defense attorneys. NOw we have credible evidence the government was eavesdropping without warrants on lawyers for islamic charities. Welcome to the new police state. It always starts as an attack on "the criminal element", and ends in a complete loss of your liberties.
