Saturday College Football Open Thread

Here's how my CFB year has gone - I could hit all 19 games I picked today and I'd still be under .500. I'm a bit better on the money side as I've done decently with my larger plays, but basically a disaster. But bowl season comes soon and a winning season dollar wise is still within reach. Today's picks:

Ohio State -1 (15 units) @ Michigan, Georgia -4 (4 units) @ Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech -4 (4 units) @ Virginia, Southern Mississippi @ Louisiana Tech -6, Louisville @ Kentucky +5, Iowa State @ West Virginia -14 (3 units), Clemson @ South Carolina +17, Cincinnati @ East Carolina -1, Alabama -15 (5 units) @ Auburn, UCLA +3 (3 units) @ USC, Oklahoma -7 (13 units) @ Oklahoma State, Texas A&m +6 (3 units) @ LSU, Notre Dame @ Stanford -3 (5 units), Florida State -3 (3 units) @ Florida, Mississippi @ Mississippi State +1 (3 units), Vanderbilt +18 (3 units) @ Tennessee, Northwestern @ Illinois +4 (3 units), BYU @ Utah State +3, North Carolina -4 (5 units) @ North Carolina State.

Go Gators!

    IGN-

When Into the Badlands hits, it hits hard. This week's episode definitely packed a punch from the get-go, as Quinn's army stormed the Widow's estate. As with the first two episodes, the action scenes here were top-notch, especially with them pitting capable fighters against capable fighters. The overarching storyline is also starting to take shape, as M.K. and Sunny's dynamic progresses. That said, the Quinn family drama continues to be the show's weakest aspect and was allotted too much screen time here.

It's silly of course.   They all are.   What I like about it is there is more, at least in my opinion-not being a huge Kung fu movie fan-more story.  I like the story so far.   I have even seen it criticized, for example in the less than stellar tv review site PreviouslyTV, for having to much story and not enough Kung fu.  Which is exactly what I like about it.

    It's beautifully shot also.

I have one nit pic.   I get that the women can't fight in six inch heels but I wish they were more careful about shooting the flat shoes they wear fighting when they started the fight in six inch heels.
I realize this is probably a complaint only an obsessive about effects and continuity would have.   Still it bugs me.   Even if it's hardly without president.   The most famous example I can think of is Blade Runner.   When he is talking to the stripper in her dressing room she is shown putting in heels and her running shoes are clearly seen at the end.   Always bugged the hell out of me.

We see a stack of jazz albums, with Miles Davis' "Tutu" in front. Problem is, the Ripley story takes place in the 1950's, and "Tutu" wasn't recorded until 1986.

...back-up QB in snowy Denver, you lost.

I would like to think my post last week played some small part in last night's game with :

Oh Yeah, F Tom Brady and his never ending wins even with a roster full of injured players.  I am so tired of hearing how good he is and great the Pats are.  He has to lose sometime...

OK, I know I played no part, most of the credit goes to Texan's former coach Kubiak and the Broncos back-up QB Brock Osweiler.  It was glorious, and I actually turned it off at half time, only to return with 5 mins left on the slim chance Denver would make it interesting.  Boy did they deliver.

In any account, the Packers are not looking like the same team that went 6-0, but in all honestly, they were not a 6-0 team.  That loss put a damper on my holiday spirits, but the Bears still suck.

Beyond the Pats, it was just as fun watching Dallas get annihilated, and the Texans won to stay tied on top the AFC South at 6-5. If only Atlanta could have beaten the Vikings...

For the record, on the local news here there was an online survey and 75% of Houstonians think the Texans will beat the Patriots on Monday night in two weeks.  I am guessing the 25% are Dallas fans.  Of course they will beat the Pats, Brady, literally, has no one to throw to if the Gronk is out for any amount of time.  Brady's top three targets all injured: Gronkowski, Edelman, and Amendola.

And the Texas D is not playing around.

The only possible upside (none / 0) (#37)
by CST on Mon Nov 30, 2015 at 09:35:12 AM EST
I can think of is that they have the time and the cushion to let people get healthy before the playoffs.

But even if Gronk could come back right away I'd rather have him sit out a regular season game than come back early and risk it.

Shoot, at this point I might even think about sitting Brady, especially with the way he's getting hit because the O-Line is bare bones.  It's not just the top targets that are injured it's the protection too.  Not that he'd ever agree to that.

That being said, I still think the Pats will win next week.  They almost never lose two games in a row.  And while Denver is a team that has given them plenty of trouble in the past, the Texans are not.

In a weird way, I'm glad they lost this game.  I feel like a lot of the pressure is off now.  At least it's off me as a fan.

I predict the Pats beat the Eagles at home, but not the week after in Houston on Sunday Night, sorry I thought it was Monday night, it's Sunday the 13th.

Not for nothing, but the Pats struggle at Reliant, the only 3 meetings at Reliant, never beating the Texans by more than 3:

    • 2013    W 34-31
    • 2010    L 34-27

My mistake I got the weeks mixed up.  Still... I'm generally confident about their schedule going forward.

If you are going to lose, losing in overtime, on the road in Denver, in the first snow game of the year, when your entire team is injured, and the game does not matter - seems like as good a way as any to do it.  At least it wasn't the Giants.

Plus, reports right now about Gronk are that it wasn't as bad as it looked, so he might be back by Houston.

...if the Pats and the Broncos have the same records, that would put the Pats in Denver for the AFC Championship.

Denver is one game away from a tie breaker scenario, and the Pats ain't getting anyone back soon.  The Bengals could finish with the same division schedule, 6-0, but they play Denver, which could give them the tie breaker with the Pats.

    Osweiller (none / 0) (#55)
by christinep on Mon Nov 30, 2015 at 01:36:35 PM EST
In the past two weeks, I've had to repeat the name several times given that there seemed to be no earlier reason to remember that Brock Osweiller was the back-up quarterback.  This morning, everyone here in Denver knows the name.

I can't say that the game was fun ... it was depressing followed by excruciating.  Periodically, we'd look out the window to see how much snow was falling where we live in Denver.  But mostly, husband stoically watched the whole game ... and, I disappeared with a book after the first quarter saying "I hope we're not totally embarrassed, and just lose by a little."  'Hate to be so disloyal to my team, but that attitude reflected the odds and what most people around this area really thought.  Anyway, with a little more than a minute left, husband called out "You have to see this ... they are going to win!" With a minute left, skeptical me figured that (in non-too-unknown Broncos' pattern) we could still figure out a way to lose.  I AM SO GLAD THAT I WAS WRONG.

To see a new guy succeed these past two weeks feels good.  This guy--Brock--looks up at the stands almost starry-eyed with smiles in the snow and the pure joy was written all over. (The parents were in the stands here, just as they were after a 16 hour drive to see their son win in Chicago.)  For today, the fairy tale is fun.

...Manning is going to have to do something spectacular to get back into the line-up, if they even planned to all along.

And I am calling BS, the guy gets pulled right after breaking the record, then all of a sudden he's got three injuries, come on, be honest, they didn't want Manning getting walloped by the Brady.

He is healthy enough to break records, but not healthy enough to play the game, pleaze.

Gov. Jerry Brown has gotten the statewide project in the ground and under construction, despite all the current naysayers who keep carping that the state can't afford it. He's countered that the state can't afford NOT to do it. The next generation of Californians will thank him for his foresight.

Certainly, it is not hard for a politician to remain consistent over a few years. But in the case of Mr. Cruz, a lawyer whose first election on the path to public office came less than 42 months ago during the May 2012 Republican primary in Texas, the playbook and confidence have changed to an extraordinarily minuscule degree.

First, they clearly like him a lot more than Bush.  And I actually think a large part of his appeal to some is how freaking annoying he is and the fact that he drives people like us crazy.

For a long time I never thought Cruz would get far.   Ga6th kept saying he would.  Fact is, he is rising.   He seems to be winning the Cruz/Marco fight for second place.

He has sh!tloads of money so he is going nowhere.  He is said to have the most extensive and well oiled machine in Iowa.

It would be unwise to underestimate him because he is loathsome.   Look who the front runner is.

If you didn't catch Donald in front of the Jewish audience yesterday you should.   "I know you understand me because you know how to make deals "
"I know you won't support me and I know why, I don't want your money"
    Yikes
Fortunately the others were no better.   Jim Gilmore happened to Schindkers List the night before.   John Kasoch told a story of his mother "Johnny, she said, Johnny if you want a real friend find a Jew"
