Another Diplomat Speaks Out Against Bolton

by TChris

Another former colleague of John Bolton has advanced the opinion that Bolton's lack of diplomatic skills makes him an inappropriate choice to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

[Frederick] Vreeland, who worked with Bolton in the early 1990s under the first President Bush, said Bolton "dealt with visitors to his office as if they were servants with whom he could be dismissive, curt and negative."

"He spoke of the U.N. as being the enemy," Vreeland added in the e-mail sent Friday to Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware. The e-mail was first reported by Time magazine. "It is totally erroneous to speak of Bolton as a diplomat."

According to Vreeland, if the Bush administration's policy is "not to reform the U.N but to destroy it" -- and that very well may be the Bush administration's unstated policy -- "Bolton is our man."

Bolton may have appeared isolated within the State Department in the first term, but his policy objectives were often in the mainstream of the rest of the administration, especially Cheney's office and the Defense Department. That has made it difficult for opponents of his nomination to attack his policy views, and has helped keep the public focus on how he dealt with subordinates.

"The problem he faces is not that he's a tough guy and is down on the U.N.," said Geoffrey Kemp, a former Reagan administration official now at the Nixon Center. "Most of the Bush administration feels the same way."

Put a fork in him. All of the crap that he has pulled on other folks has come back to haunt him. This is evidence of why time is important in the advise and consent. If it is a rush job, no one speaks up, but if the Senate deliberates and is patient, more people may step forward and weigh in with reasons and evidence about the nominees. Colin Powell reportedly is not too keep on the guy. I bet Colin still rues the day he went to the UN with his dog and pony show. It's hard to get your credibility back.

CA - Yes, his attackers are just so believeable: "Vreeland was a member of, and financial contributor to, a group called "Diplomats & Commanders for Change," which opposed President Bush in November's election. The organization's mission statement says that its members "are deeply concerned by the damage the Bush Administration has caused to our national and international interests." How could any member of the above be trusted to be unbiased? Answer is: None.

Let me see here......if someone is against Bolton for the UN position, that makes him biased, then it would be reasonable to conclude that those that favor Bolton's approval are un-biased. Didn't know that

walter - Well, happy to educate you. Actually, most people don't care. Many people believe the President should have who he wants for foreign policy positions. A few are fans of Bolton, and are biased. And then we have people like Veerland who is biased, but attempts to hide behind his background as a FS type. We call those people Left Wing Democrats. Bolton is being Borked and Thomased. You guys are creating new conservatives by the hour, all to keep someone out who can only serve three years IF the Demos can win a national election. That's stupid. Big time stupid.

Seems the bureaucrats don't like him... Every American must decide where his or her loyalty lies, with the US or with the UN. Bolton has made his decision, and I, for one, approev of it, because it is my decision as well.

All this dust-upping over Bolton confuses me, too. Just let the guy in there . . . does anyone really think that if Bolton gets shot down Bush is going to nominate someone with different attitudes? The Pres himself is anti-UN, so of course he's going to send an anti-UN ambassador there! As PPJ says, it's a three year appointment anyway, if the Dems can actually put together something resembling an effective campaign. Pretty big if, but possible nonetheless.

oh yeah, and ca: Powell can kiss his credibility goodbye. There's no "getting it back" after you go that far, on record, into Wonderland, with a straight face. He doesn't even deserve to be considered a tragic figure. Just a pathetic, opportunistic tool, a Cassius type of guy.

Actually I didn't know how you could make a point by talking out of both sides of your face. Against appointment...biased For appointment....un-biased..no, wait for appointment......biased Yeah, I can see George Voinovich becoming a republican. Is it that we are creating more republicans or are we just lowering our values to accept these guys?
