    There's another, similar online petition going around that I signed last week. Can't find it to save my life, but I think it was linked from Americablog. It already had something like 15,000 signatures at that time. I wonder why the DLC wasn't complaining whenever McAulliffe made similar comments (and he did). Maybe because Dean wasn't hand-picked by the new donkeys? Their hissy-fit is so petty and so politically stupid that I can't for the life of me figure out what they are thinking. The party elected Dean precisely because he is a firebrand. He *is* the spokesman for the party, and he *does* represent us. If people in the party want to disagree with him, they should call him up on the phone and express their disagreement. Russert and Stephanopolous, with Newt Gingrich as the sparring partner, is not the place to be having internal policy debates.

    I often times applaud Howard's message, but I remain unconvinced of it's sincerity. I recall when Terry McAullife was DNC chair receiving a horde of mail asking for donations with "IMPORTANT CRISIS: The Republicans are full of extremists, working everyday to fulfill their unconscionable plan to damage our democracy...yada, yada." Then, you turn on the propaganda delivery machine (aka Television) and you hear Democrats saying, "our Republican friends, whom I have the greatest respect for, need to realize that we have supported their efforts (fill in the blank: Patriot Act, Iraq War funding bills, bankruptcy bill, etc.)" It is never the underlying principle of the bill, its always a proposition to reduce its overall effect. Aka Republican Light. When I am convinced that progressive rhetoric matches progressive principles, I will be more enthusiastic about defending those who talk the talk. For now, it sounds to me like a "grassroots" fundraising ploy of good cop, bad cop.

    No. 6023. Avid deaniac. His record speaks for itself. Compare his record as 5 time governor in Vermont with Dubya's record in anything and get back to me if you think there is anything that Dubya can point to with pride.

    Isn't Dean on record as saying "I hate Republicans and everything they stand for."? Is that really the spirit you people wish to rally with? Hatred and anger: it stirs up the base but is rarely good for one's country. Unfortunately it seems to be an essential ingredient in "progressive" politics. Here's a thought for you, if you're interested: most people are fairly rational and of good will (at least, that is the principle on which democracy is based). They don't buy this contempt-driven ideology. So in the end conservatism, which values objective thought and rational discourse over emotional hype and hatred, will win. It's a logical consequence of ordinary human decency. Sorry.

    Call it righteous indignation towards those who think it is fine to murder and pillage in the name of Corporate Profits - and then turn around and lie about their intentions, use symbols as a shield, and say the opposite of everything they mean to fool the uneducated. Besides, we all know that the acerbic racists, religious bigots, chauvinists all make their home under the "big tent" of the Republican Party - seated next to Dobson, Savage, Helms, Robertson, Thurmond, Falwell, Limbaugh, Hannity, Coulter, Buchanan, et.al. Those people aren't hateful at all! The reason Dean gets under the skin of Conservatives is due to his emulation of the rhetorical tactics that Conservatives have used incessantly since the days of Reagan. Their false innocuousness in asking why Liberals project so much "hate" in dealing with words used by Dean is yet another example of those same tactics. Meanwhile, lay Republicans (the party's sheep) enjoy cheerleading for it, but they never could take it in return.

    Yeah, the republican-lite approach has been working so well. At least with Dean we can go down swinging, standing by our ideals. I can't sign the petition though, no politician really speaks for me. Has Dean spoken out against the war on drugs? Then I might sign.

    Sorry, but I can't sign this. To me it seems silly. Like some kind of b.s. loyalty oath. We speak for OURSELVES, people!! Only when our leaders have a CLEAR sense of our complete message should they start yapping off like bad stand-up comedians. Howard Dean is already a failure. Be serious. He's already proven himself completely unsavvy with his mouth. To speak the ugly truth is one thing, to speak it with as much ugliness as that you are criticizing is another. He has not fully thought through his mission, how he should project it to the public, or even what bad personal tendencies he has that need to be eliminated. He should've done this rhetorical preparation WELL BEFORE he started yapping pointlessly in a manner that WILL NOT help the left, the country, or ANYONE!! Jesus H., is this really the best we can do??? Face reality, Dean does not have the imagination, the creativity, or the self-critical intellect necessary to lead the Democratic Party. Maybe he'll win congress and the white hosue back. And as a good lefty I realize that will probably make next to no differene if the "democrats" elected are nothing more than lite republicans. Which is what they ALWAYS are!!

    It's not that all Repubs are necessarily Christian theocrats and white supremicists. It's not even that all Christian theocrats and white supremicists who vote in our elections are Republicans. It's that, more than any other rank-and-file group, they're the GOP base. The GOP has been courting these nutjobs--quite successfully--since Nixon formulated his Southern strategy. The GOP doesn't make a move without spinning it for people whose politics begin and end at their terror of people who don't look or think like them.
