Indonesia to Cut Jail Sentences of Bali Bombers

Head-shaker of the day: Bali is going to cut the sentences of the Bali Bombers and tens of thousands of other prisoners.

Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, who is serving a 30-month jail term for his role in instigating the Bali bombings, will have his sentence cut as prisoners across Indonesia are granted leniency to mark independence day, the local media has reported. Justice Minister Hamid Awaluddin said Bashir and some of the 24 other people jailed for their roles the 2002 Bali attacks would receive sentence remissions in conjunction with Wednesday's independence day celebrations, according to the Jakarta Post.

A Jakarta court in March sentenced Bashir to 30 months in jail for taking part in a conspiracy that led to the Bali bombings, which killed 202 people including 88 Australians.

...The office of the Justice Ministry in Bali has proposed remissions for 19 of 24 Bali bombers in the Kerobokan prison on the resort island, Antara quoted ministry official Mayun Mataram as saying.

Also receiving a sentence reduction will by Tommy Suharto:

Tommy Suharto, the youngest son of former dictator Suharto who is serving a 10-year jail sentence for killing a judge, is also eligible for leniency, the Post said.

And Schappelle Corby? Serving 20 years in an Indonesian prison for 4 kilos of pot that probably wasn't hers? Nothing.

see, she should have killed someone, she'd be out in a couple of years. I'm sure she'll know better next time. on the other hand, we in the states haven't got much standing, considering the inanity of our mandatory sentencing laws.

What arrogance. The international publicity that Schapelle Corby got and this tid bit add up to a major political statement by Indonesia. Odd, that if "Indonesia" were replaced with "US" in your post it would be less shocking.

I hope that corby will be acquitted but the fact is unless the people in her country( australians ) don't get real mad, she will be killed in some third world prison system, after all she is not muslim, and leniency for non muslims is out of the question, hope i am wrong, but she just maybe on the way to a bad death at the hands of some third world guys. "remember its the culture" don't be a fool don't go to third world so called nation states of the muslim third world empire.

Fred-What would happen to her in US prison?

Just who are these'Third world guys'? Fred? Do you mean people with rather backward, bigoted and uninformed attitudes? Well, if so, you don't necessarily have to go the developing world to find them. After reading what you wrote, I'm pretty convinced you maybe a 'third world' guy yourself. I assume you believe Islam to be some homogenous, spiteful and primitive belief system intend on destroying civilisation as you understand it. Fred, don't let the Nation Enquirer and Hollywood be your guide to the world. Go take a look and see what's actually happening. If you do go please be aware that among the hoards of ‘third world johnnies’ there just may be small clusters of educated folk who know more about what happens in your prison system than you do. Be prepared to explain why the US imprisons more people per head of population than any other country in the world; why, up until this year the US, together with a handful of other Countries, was willing to execute minors; Why the condition of some State prison health systems have been described by inspection teams as ‘third world’; why so many US prisoners are condemned to prison sentences spanning whole lifetimes; why the enlightened US justice system has, in many areas, phased out the rehabilitative sentencing model, a reflection some believe of a truly civilised society, and adopted a savage, retaliatory system instead. The Third World? It may be closer than you think Fred.
