Iraq Hangs 13 Who Aided Insurgency

The death penalty is back in force in Iraq.

The Iraqi authorities have hanged 13 people accused of taking part in the insurgency, the first execution of militants since the US-led invasion....The US-led coalition abolished the death penalty in Iraq after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, but it was re-instated during the handover to Iraqi control in June 2004.

It was reinstated so they could kill Saddam, but they've found other uses for it.

The BBC's Andrew North in Baghdad says that, with more than 14,000 people currently in US coalition detention, it raises the possibility that there could be many more executions.

Background here and here.

How can they tell the difference between these executions and all the other executions? There are so many going on that you need a scorecard.

Yee ha. I guess this was inevitable when you export chaos to a revenge based society. The only difference, I suppose, is that these executions appear to be a little better organized form of revenge than the usual executions that take place on mini-buses or on lines to apply for jobs at police stations. Another proud day for in the long annals of all the good things we have done for the Iraqi people.

With democracy left hanging by a thread here in the U.S. Bush has successfully exported the culture of life to Iraq.

desertswine, re:"How can they tell the difference between these executions and all the other executions? There are so many going on that you need a scorecard." Short answer is they don't keep a scorecard on the unofficial executions. According to the Washington Post today (I believe I found this from a link in Kos) the Iraqi government is suppressing the body count on execution style killing of Sunnis.

Clearly there is a full-blown civil war in Iraq now. The situation is past the stage where it might have been possible to establish a government acceptable to all. Now Sunnis will bomb Shi'ite holy places, and Shi'ites will hang Sunnis, and so it will go. The responsibility for this state of affairs lies squarely with the Bush administration and their wretched dreams of empire.

    Yeah, funny ain't it:
Rumsfeld Says Media Exaggerating Iraqi Civilian Deaths[...]"Interestingly, all of the exaggerations seem to be on one side," Rumsfeld said
    But, wait, there's more!
Official Says Shiite Party Suppressed Body Count [...] In addition to the morgue worker, three sources -- the Health Ministry official, an official with the Interior Ministry and an international official in Baghdad -- involved in tallying or monitoring the mounting deaths also have put the toll at 1,000 or more
I agree with Rumsfeld on one point; All of the lies do seem to be on one side.

There is one group that does not have to worry about the death penalty in Iraq, Americans. There have been numerous charges of murder against American soldiers and civilians and, to my knowledge, not a single American has been tried in Iraqi courts. Now if this is a legitimate goverment with a functioning court system, why aren't Americans accused of committing crimes against Iraqis being turned over to Iraqi jurisdiction?

"Yes I rmember the video of the US soldier shooting an unarmed wounded Iraqi man in Faloojah." That wasn't a murder, that was an execution. All perfectly legal, you see.
