Jane's Invitation to De-Lurk

Jane at Firedoglake has an excellent post up tonight about some of the problems in blogging to both newcomers and regulars:

...some times it seems impenetrable; bloggers tend to talk to the blogosphere, we assume people are following the conversation and are familiar with the cast of characters, storylines and slang that are conventions here. It can make it awfully hard to catch on. In our defense, people who show up here day after day get tired of having the same things explained over and over again, and since those are the ones we hear from the most we tend to respond to their wishes.

Someone at Drinking Liberally last night raised a similar issue with me. He's an avid reader and has tried to get his partner interested in blogs, but the partner says it's either like Greek or entering a conversation in the middle. He asked why I don't create a short primer for every topic TalkLeft covers in depth and post it prominently on the site or inside future posts on the particular topic.

Other than "I don't have time," I really didn't have an answer for him. It is a good idea. After reading Jane's post, I'm wondering whether there isn't a blogger out there who has the time, and would like extra visitors to their blog, who would be willing to write a short, reputably sourced synopsis, from a liberal point of view, of issues like: PlameGate, Karl Rove's involvement, the Scooter Libby trial, the NSA wiretap issue, Guantanamo, CIA secret prisons, even the Duke lacrosse case. (This last one would have to be from a defense point of view since liberals seem divided.) One pagers at most, which include writer's byline and a link to his or her blog.

We could send these primers out to liberal bloggers who write about the topic, and those who like it, could either put it in the sidebars of their blogs or inside future posts on the topic, which would bring readers to the writer's blog.

Just an idea. Any thoughts or other suggestions?

What about letting readers here write some and submit them to you for approval?

Simple timelines have a easy to grasp layout and enough facts to get you started on any issue. If readers are lost on a given topic do a search for "topic + timeline" and usually you will find enough info to get your comfortable with the basics. Here's a few examples... CIA Secret Prison timeline - dKosopedia Plame leak timeline - dKosopedia Torture timeline - AFSC Duke rape allegation - Newsweek IL Gov. bribery timeline (Fitz's day job) - WQAD.com 'The Emerging Story Behind the Wiretaps' - Daily Kos diary Grasping detail in context is hard work for everyone but if you put the time learning about something it's rewarding. I recommend reading all of Fitz's filings in the Plame case - they are every bit as well written as Jeralyn or Jane Hamsher's posts and they have the added benefit of being in the form of an idictment. Special Counsel, Patrick J. Fitzgerald A few general lessons I have learned since I started commenting on blogs - 1) if you don't get a response to your comment don't worry about it, 2) if you voice disagreement don't be disruptive, bring facts, 3) don't take crude attacks seriously - anonymity may enable honest commentary but it's flip side is rude behavior - ignore the trolls. 4) try and stay on topic.

Well, sometimes it's an concerted effort. I have got the "invisible man" treatment here because a certain segment of the regular posters don't want any foreigners here. But of couse noone of the cowards have had the backbone to simple tell me to p*ss off. Maybe for the sake of honesty Talkleft should put a neat "Americans only" sign somewhere.

mar - Maybe calling blog readers you have never met "cowards" isn't the best way to invite discussion. A comment that does not elicit a response isn't a conspiracy to ignore - sometimes remarks stand on their own and no comment is necessary. In general, comments that are non sequiturs or tangents to the original post tend to get ignored on any blog. If writing comments is unsatisfactory it's easy to start your own blog and deal with the problems cited in this diary from the other end of the looking glass. Personally, I think TalkLeft is one of the most civil blogs around.

After thinking about this, I have come to the conclusion that there are people interested in politics, avid readers of politics and then there are the perpetually jonesing, twitching new junkies. There are some blogs that are very good for new to intermediate political fans. For example, Steve Clemons, Kevin Drumm, Pam's House Blemd. Kos, Atrios, firedoglake, you, are not for them. Those sites are the NFL of politics. Shrug. It's a compliment and a reality. I don't know how you can get the average browser up to speed. All you can do is be kind, welcoming, and appreciative of all your readers. And you are, and we love you for it.

mar, no one responds to my posts, either but I really doubt it's because they are all cowards. It could be because I didn't post anything interesting, or because it was so good it didn't need a response. just kidding on the last part. I know that I am a very poor writer, sometimes my brain jumps around too much.

That is the most absurd criticism of TL I have ever heard. Are you on medication? If not it may help to calm your paranoia and grandiosity. Most here respond to content not nationality. There are a few wingnut xenophobes who have attacked commenters who are from abroad with slurs because that is the best that that can do. Ignore them. If you have something to say please do. Also calling TL commenters cowards is not the best way to invite dialogue as joejoejoe pointed out.

I've been on this site for a couple years. I cannot think of one conservative wingnut that did that. I am sure you have a link or a quote by the "wingnut" that said it. Please show.

gus: I know that I am a very poor writer, sometimes my brain jumps around too much. I'm glad it's not just me, gus! Sometimes I lose mine and don't notice it's gone for quite awhile. It's such a small thing I hardly miss it when it's missing. ;-) Mar: I have got the "invisible man" treatment here because a certain segment of the regular posters don't want any foreigners here. I wouldn't assume motivations, mar. Qite often I post something too and there is no response, especially if it's rhetorical or self evident, we all do. I always read your posts even if I don't respond to them

Wile E. Coyote-It is not so interesting for me to search for the quotes. The comments were slamming either someone from Germany or France criticising the Iraq war. Instead of responding to the content they attacked the person's nationality.

mar, get over it. Unless you parade your nationality in every post, most of us don't have a clue, and don't have a care, whether you're American or not. Come on, it's just an anonymous blog with a bunch of opinionated know-it-alls (like me! :-)) for heaven's sake. On topic, I think Wiki's a great idea. Although, ultimately, I think each person's individual personality is the deciding factor on whether they lurk or participate. Just like every party or business meeting or whatever you've ever been to. I could go on, but I think you get the idea...

Mar, if you can point me to a comment where someone attacked you for your nationality, let me know and I'll delete it. Personal insults and name-calling are not allowed. Unfortunately, I can't read all the comments, I'd have no time to blog, so my editing is often haphazard. By the way, I responded to recent criticisms about my editing last night here.
