Site News: Migration to Scoop

I know everyone is frustrated with the comments. I've been saying for the last month the site is moving from Movable Type to Scoop (see Daily Kos as an example of modified Scoop) and it really is happening. The new site is built, it looks almost exactly like the current site, commenting problems should be eliminated, and there will be the opportunity for those of you who want to blog but don't want your own site to create your own posts.

I'm not sure how reader posting and comment rating will work yet, since unlike Daily Kos, there are conservatives (PPJ and others, are you listening?) who comment regularly on TL. While I have no intention of letting TalkLeft become a free-for-all, it's also not fair to bash conservative commenters just because of their point of view. It will remain a partisan, liberal site, especially on crime and political issues, but some accomodation will be made to allow conservatives to comment without fear of being trashed solely because of their point of view.

As for a launch date: We're in the debugging mode. We should be live next week.

I didn't understand at first why I would have to pay a few thousand dollars to convert the site. After 30 days and 30 nights of working with the pros who are doing it, I think I understand. There are hundreds of templates, that because I want TL to look as much the same as possible, have to be modified. We're up to the importing phase.

No one hates change in routine more than me. Believe me when I say it will still be the TalkLeft Oldsmobile, just cranked up to a super-car engine.

I'll be in New York for the next four days, so comment approval may take longer than usual, but your comments will show up. Thanks again for your patience.

I am not a techie and don't claim to know anything about Scoop (other than being enrolled in a couple of Scoop sites). Seems to me you should be able to dismantle the automatic oblivion (leaving it to admins) in the ratings and have some fun with the rankings. Perhaps: Ad Hominem, Concerned Troll, Naked Partisan. Ad Hominem for bashing others beyond acceptable level. Hopefully you could make Ad Hominem auto notify an admin after a user got more than a specified number. Then you could decide to review to see if banishment was warranted. Concern Troll (should be obvious) could be given for comments where the poster gives bad advice to his party/ideological opponent while appearing very concerned for his opponent's party/ideology. Naked Partisan is for straight forward idelogical based comments ( I suppose you could divide it into R or D or C or L). Perhaps a label after a specified number of rankings. Thus being hit with the right number of Naked Partisans, I might have a tag of Partisan D appear by my name. Or PPJ might get tagged Concerned Troll and then have that ranking be overtaken by a numbr of Naked Partisans rankings so that the tag change to Partisan R. Is this sort of ranking possible/ desireable?

geez, i don't know, it's kind of fun bashing ppj, solely for the usual lunacy of his content. :)

TL... Please..... Name me a conservative that is for women's rights, gay rights, national health care.. redoing the drug laws.... I am a Social Liberal, or a term that is starting to come into use, a Hard Liberal...someone who takes a strong position on national defense... think Scoop Jackson, JFK, FDR, Truman.... And here I thought you had been paying attention all this time... ;-)

Um Jim... Social liberals would speak out against George Allen's use of racist words and code words. Hard liberals would defend the American Consitution and condemn water boarding and torture. As I recall, you took the opportunity to insult WWII vets like my father and uncle by claiming during WWII, US servicemen violated the Geneva Conventions.. sort of like Bill O'Really and Malmedy. You can call yourself whatever you like, but you devalue words when you twist their definitions to suit your purposes.

Concerned Troll.....good one Molly Bloom! I hope TL takes your advice and creates interesting (and humorous) categories like the ones you suggested.

Molly - During WWII POWs were killed by American troops. That is an unfortunate fact, and stating the truth does not insult anyone, and that would include my father and uncles as well yours. So your claimed "insult" gets no symopathy from me. My point re Allen was that I hate to see charges made by sources that won't identify themselves, especially when others claim differently. I made no comment re the Confederate flag... If you have been paying attention, and evidently you have not, I will again remind you of the many comments I have made in support of the various social issues that good liberals should be for. Unfortunately the anti-war Left and the BHAWs are more concerned with their agendas than a broken health care system, the rights of women and gays and Social Security. Doubt me? None of the social issues are dominating... no hardly mentioned on a national level, yet they are of high interest to millions of voters. You may choose which side you are on.

concerned troll: one who worries that you might notice he/she is a troll. :) ok, this does not describe jim in any way, shape or form. no, jim revels in his trollness. he has become one with his inner troll! i actually kind of admire that sort of single-minded dedication to a cause, whatever the heck that cause might be. :)

Citations please for violations of Genenva Convention by US forces in WWII. Please include whether or not those violations were prosecuted. I asked you once before for this and you chose not to reply for whatever reason (perhaps you didn't see it). I haven't a clue as to what BHAW is. I am not anti-war. I am anti-stupid, unjustifed war (which Iraq qualifies as); I am anti-offensive war (which Iraq also qualifies as) as was US policy in WWII and one of the principles behind Nuremburg. To paraphrase Jusice Jackson, war crimes trials were not held because the Germans lost; they were held because the Germans started the war (offensive war). Several sources were on the record about Allen, including 2 former teammates and a coaches's wife. I am not sure why you can't or won't condemn racism or use of racist code words. by Allen, even hypothetically. I don't have an agenda, other than seeing the conservative movement permanetly discredted and on the Ash heap of history where it belongs as it is anti democratic (small d, not Democratic party) and harmful to America. Social Security does not need major overhauling and if you are implying it does, you are conflating Social Security with Medicare and Medicaid. All for fixing health care, woman's rights and gay rights. Not sure why you would imply I am not. Still waiting on your inner social liberal to condemn Allen's use of racist terms and code words (evidently that is difficult for you) as well as torture and waterboarding (evidently that is difficult as well for you). Those are social issues, not fiscal ones. Not holding my breath though. We can discuss the intersection of social and fiscal policy later and see how much of a social liberal you are.

Molly - WWII was not a "defensive" war. We almost immediately went on the offense and invaded North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and then Europe. In the Pacific we almost immediayely launched offensive operations against the Japanese fleet and invaded New Guinea and then a whole list of islands... If you want to complain that Japan attacked first, you may also want to remember our assistance to China. And then there was the Lend Lease Program long before we were actually at war. Point being that FDR recognized that we had to get in the fight because the Axis were evil empires. He just used a difference method than Bush. And if you believe that the US did not have cases of US military shooting German and Japanese prisoners... well, what can I say? You are hopless. When I am convinced Allen is a racist, and that he said what was claimed, I'll condemn. Until then I just put it down to politics. Will you then condemn Byrd? No? well, the standard excuse is that he has "changed." Apply same logic to Allen and get on with life. And if you think Social Security doesn't need fixing then I hope you are not depending on any part of it for your retirement. And BHAW is short for Bush Haters At WORK. And since you are all for National Health Care, I am sure you condemned the Demos for thier lack of support for the new Medicare Rx Insurance. Didn't you?

Jim, We were attacked in WWII. We didn't by any stretch of anyone's imaginaton attack anyone first. By J. Jackson's definition, it was not an offensive war on our part, though it was on the German's and Japanese part. You want to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Nazi's in Germany, the Facisists in Italy and the Japanese militarists in order to salvage, Bush, the GOP and your reputations be my guest. Its your reputation. Srike one. You can't come up with examples of your assertion that US forces violated the Geneva Convention, so you assert that I am hopeless. I demand strict proof of all of plaintiff's claims. You have none. Lack of evidence, case dismissed. Fees for friviolous litigation are assessed against plaintiff. Strike two. As for Allen, even hypothetically, if Allen said what was claimed he said, you are not able to condemn. Ok. As for your poor comparsion to Byrd. Byrd renouced his past and you don't have any evidence of racist behavior by Byrd. Compare with Allen. We have the allegations from his past, his current association with a white supremicist group, his recent (as within the last 45 days) use of a French racist term. That is current behavior as well as past behavior. I don't condone what Byrd did 50 years ago. I am pleased he has renounced his past. A good social liberal, as you claim to be, what understand the difference between Byrd and Allen. Strike 3. Hit the showers, you are being pulled from the game!
