The Congressional Election Outlook

From Big Tent Democrat

Charlie Cook's upcoming column says:

If you want to know how much pain the midterm elections are likely to inflict on the Republican Party, keep your eyes on the national spotlight. If, for the next three weeks, attention remains focused on the war in Iraq and on congressional scandals, the Republicans could lose 20 to 30 seats--or perhaps even more.

. . . In short, we need to be aware of how bad this election could be for Republicans, while also keeping in mind that politics is a volatile business. The spotlight could shift another time or two before November 7. Anyone who focuses only on the Republicans' vulnerability or only on the impossibility of knowing what will hold the public's attention in the coming weeks is missing half of the story.

Charlie is darn smart. I listen to him.

Big Tent, Charlie saying "The spotlight could shift another time or two before November 7" just might be the understatement of the year. You noted that this was from his upcoming column, so you obviously have access to it, although you did not link to it, probably because you can't yet. Is there anything else in it that you can tell us about? Does he have some knowledge about what Jeralyn said she felt the other day here: This says to me there will be another October surprise that results in elevating the terror threat... This time around, with all their current problems, they need a doozie. Don't put it past them.

The Republicans aren't going to lose control of anything....Diebold will see to that.

Moving in to the endgame of this election season, the goal shoud be to KEEP the focus where it is now, barring Rover's much touted Oct Surprise (Iran anyone?) Keep the media focused, keep pushing the new lows to the forefront as they are reached. Keep on message, and for ONCE, show a unified front, and the people will follow. If we do not pull a solid majority in this election, we are truly in a sad, sad state.

I usually get a good chuckle out of the parodies from The Internet Weekly Report, but this one is just....... well....... kickin' 'em when they're down? This GOP Picture Says It All

This comment sounds typical of the navel-gazing of someone who works in DC, or in the media. Do you? People do not form opinions based on the polls, the polls reflect people's opinions. Polls show the effect of a message; they are NOT the message itself.

cymro: Sorry for the misunderstandin', I evidently wasn't clear enough. My comment was in reference to the current scandal-fest the GOP has going on, not on polls. Hope that clears things up.
