Friday Open Thread

TChris is off in wine country this weekend (lucky him) and I'm working at my day job and testing the new scoop site in my spare moments. It's also a spectacular fall day and I want to get outside.

So, for those of you with something to say, here's the place.

Some things I would blog about if I had the time today:

< Bob Ney Pleads Guilty to Felonies | The Congressional Election Outlook >
  • The Online Magazine with Liberal coverage of crime-related political and injustice news

  • Contribute To TalkLeft

"Pot guru Ed Rosenthal indicted by the feds again -- after an appeals court threw out his first conviction." He was sentenced to one day on the first conviction, which he served. How can they reindict him? What happened to double jeopardy? Ed

Lets Go Mets! Lets Go Mets! Old man Tom Glavine pitched a gem last night, made Pujols look pedestrian. I hope John Maine can match him tonight. Aside from Pujols and the spark-plug Eckstein...the Cards seem to be carrying a lot of dead weight in that line-up. Juan Encarnacion (who?) batting clean up? Preston Wilson, the human strike-out, batting second? From a letter to the editor in the NY Daily News the other day, I paraphrase...."I wish all the countries with nuclear weapons would just fire them and get it over with, the suspense is killing me. But only after the Mets win the World Series." I second that...nobody fire anything for a couple more weeks...please! I've been waiting 20 years for another Met title.

Fortunately, where I live - in Vermont - we don't have many problems counting votes and making every vote count. But in other states (Ohio, Arizona, and Florida come to mind) that may not be the case. Volunteers are needed for Election Protection 2006! I got an email request from my denomination's (Episcopal Church) social justice outreach organization, which stated that the National Committee for Fair Elections needs help to assist voters around the country on and before Election Day. Attorneys, law students, and paralegals are needed to help staff the national hotline before Election Day in Washington, DC and on Election Day in Washington, DC, New York City, San Francisco, CA and at local call centers throughout the country. Volunteers with legal training are also needed in targeted locations to serve in various roles on Election Day. Don't have a legal background? You can still sign up to volunteer. NCFE need many volunteers to make Election Protection a success. For more information or to volunteer, visit the site of the National Committee for Fair Elections. Just thought I'd pass this on, since TL's leaders and posters are interested in, well, keepin' things legal! :)

Dear Attorneys: What do you think about the Washington Post's editorial insisting that Reed did wrong in reporting his property sale? The Chicago Tribune says there's no 'there' there.

Since this an open thread... I just installed VOIP today. Using X-Lite as the softphone. Is anyone else using this combination, and figured out how to keep the sound quality and mic volume reasonably level?

They charged Ed Rosenthal with new crimes, including tax-related charges, which give them the basis of a new indictment even in the assumption that the original indictment cannot be refiled after the sentence has been served. This is a sleazy and immoral tactic by people who know better. Ed Rosenthal could not rightfully owe protection money to the same people who he needs protection from. Ask nicely and he might give you whatever money you want. Do you intend to collect anything at all, or would you prefer to have your tax out of his hide?

Just because you drink to forget does not mean you won't remember eventually, and you're going to be really sorry when you see what kind of a mess you've made. You are going to have to clean it up. he might give you whatever money you want. Do you intend to collect anything at all, or would you prefer to have your tax out of his hide?

TL, Your thing is the "Polititics of Crime" but you often avoid the crime of politics if it doesn't stand on your side of the aisle and that is too bad. There has been little discussion here of the "Gloria Wise Boys and Girls Club" scandal in NY. Apparently the officers of this non-profit thought that remodeling thier vacation home bathrooms were more important than public services. Services such as elder and pre-school immunizations that were supposed to be funded by monies that were diverted to funding the AIR AMERICA radio network to the tune of $875'000 dollars. To date $640,000 have been paid back. Where is the rest now that "Air America" has filed for Chapter 7? Was that the amount to fund Al Franken's screediness? The odd part in this whole incident is how all those involved will never serve a day in jail for thier theft because they support the current AG/next Governor namely Eliot Spitzer who gave the perps a look-away pass because they were his people. Did I mention that this corrupt, silver-spooned, spoiled, half-blind AG will be the next NYS governor? The "Politics of Crime" my arse. It is more than likely it is the crime of the politics of Talk Left. Someone wrote earlier that TL had become just another political hack site and I disagreed but lately it really has become just that. Jerilyn, I always liked this site because originally it was an honest site but within the last year it has become a rather mindless partisan site. I guess it is your site and all but any lack of objectivness limits your site visits from those that might disagree with your views. Too bad someone that wanted to change the world stole money from those that needed it more than they did. I'm sure Ms. Rhodes still cashed her check. I'm sure some here welcome your abject partisanship but they are those who have little to offer except for some sort of TL sycophancy. I wish you the best to fund your new construction but it will probably end up being a generic verision of KOS.

Jimcee, TalkLeft has always been a partisan site, see the about page as I've said many times. As for funding the construction of the new site, I don't recall asking for help. I recall saying I was funding it as an investment. Contributions are always welcome here but never necessary. I would not have undertaken the transition to Scoop if I were counting on donations, it's way too expensive. TalkLeft is not going to become generic. The only changes will be in ease of commenting and in allowing some users to post their own stories. Their stories will relate to the issues TalkLeft has always written about.

NOw if this isn't ridiculous overreaction I don't know what is. Last Wednesday Secret Service agents pulled 14 year old Julia Wilson, an eight grade student in Sacramento, out of her biology class without her parents present to intimidate and threaten her. But you've got to be impressed this little girls reaction:
Julia Wilson, 14, was pulled out of class after federal agents placed her on a checklist. Upset about the Iraq war, Wilson had posted a picture of President Bush on her Myspace page and wrote the words "Kill Bush" across the top with a dagger stabbing his hand. Wilson replaced the page when she learned threats to the President are federal offenses. But agents had already seen the page. She was questioned for 15 minutes by the agents. Her parents say they should have been there. Wilson said the agents' questions led her to tears. Her mother said an agent showed up at the family's home and spoke to her, but promised to return once her daughter was home. The school's assistant principal said he was given the impression her mother knew she would be questioned at school. Legally, parents don't have to be present. Julia Wilson said the officers told her she could be sent to juvenile hall for making the threat. She says now, she's going to organize a student protest against the Iraq war.
Good for Julia. What better way to tell them where to stick their tactics. What's the world come to? Now we have terrorists in the eigth grade in California? BTW, Don't forget to vote rethuglican next month.
