On Tuesday, October 14, trial begins for John Muhammed, the older of the two "sniper" suspects.

Prosecutors in the Muhammad case said they plan to introduce evidence from up to 15 shootings across the country they have connected to the two defendants. About 20 investigators from the sniper task force have moved to Virginia Beach, and a truck full of evidence went down Monday. Defense attorneys will be taking their own trucks soon.

....To cope with the onslaught, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach have set aside about $1.6 million to pay for extra security, overtime and supplies.

"We've had a lot of high-profile cases, including death penalty cases, but nothing that has ever garnered this much attention," said Paula Miller, spokeswoman for the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office...Miller expects more than 200 journalists and up to 34 television satellite trucks to arrive for the trial.

Sunday's Washington Post features "Muhammed's Inexorable Descent", a lengthy profile of Muhammed.

In other recent case news, John Lee Malvo has filed a notice of intent to use the insanity defense at his trial in November. And the Judge in the Muhammed case has barred Muhammad from raising mental health issues because he refused to submit to a court-ordered interview with a proscecution expert.

A timeline of the case is here. The Court's official webpage for the case, with pleadings and orders, is here.
