Action Alert: Texas Prisoner in Need of Emergency Medical Care

We received this by e-mail, and believe it warrants dissemination:

Chanda Bennett, a 27 year old female prisoner of Rockwall County Jail
is being denied her heart and blood pressure medications. She was just transfered to ER on June 24th and diagnosed with a heart attack and in need of a pacemaker Instead the jail transferred back to incarceration and are now refusing to transfer the inmate to the ER for continued radiating arm "electrifying" pain and vomiting. Both are classic symptoms of a heart attack extending and are life threatening emergencies.

Please help by signing
this petition to Texas governor. Chanda is in jail for a nonviolent misdemeanor and her life is in danger from medical neglect.

The Petition ends with:

We insist that she is placed in a hospital at once, and if the prison can not afford her medical treatment, we insist that she is released at once. The state of Texas has taken custody of Chandra and in doing so assumes responsibility of the inmate (Chanda's) health care. This has been clearly established by law and is also a moral issue. Financial constraints do not matter, the state assumes responsibility to keep an inmate alive. There is absolutely no excuse for denying legitimate medical care to a sick inmate. We the undersigned demand action at once on this matter.

This petition needs national distribution. Only 108 people have signed to date. Go give it a read, and if you believe a prison does not have the right to change a misdemeanor sentence into a death sentence without a full hearing, go sign.

The Petition was written by the Prisoner Activist Community.

Prisoners pay for crime with time. They cannot be made to pay with their lives. Our view: Treat her or release her. It's that simple. The alternative: Texas can gear up for the lawsuit that will follow if she gets sicker or dies--it won't be cheap and the taxpayers of Texas won't be happy when they have to shell out the dollars--or see cuts in other programs to accomodate the settlement.
