Bump and Update: She's in.

The media has assembled.

Here is one from this morning when she surrendered. Another of her pre-dawn arrival.

Martha Stewart's Last Day of Freedom

Martha Stewart will surrender tomorrow to begin her 5 month prison term. Today is her last day of freedom for five months. For those who think "Camp Cupcake" is a walk in the park, it's not. It may not have cells with bars and razor-wired fences, but there is no way that inmates are not aware 24/7 that their choices and movements are restricted and they have very little control over their lives. Here's some of what Martha reportedly will face:

The process will begin as soon as Stewart voluntarily surrenders on Friday. Just like every other inmate at the minimum security facility, Stewart will be fingerprinted, photographed, and strip searched.

She will have to give a urine sample in front of the guards. She will be issued a prison uniform and black steel toed boots. She will be given bedding -- a pillow, sheets, a blanket and towels. She will be assigned a bed in one of the dorm-like facilities.

Her day will consist of:

It's like clockwork: Up at 6 a.m., at work by 7:30 a.m., lunch is at 11:30 a.m. The workday ends at 3:45 p.m.. Dinner is served at 4 p.m. and then there are activities including educational classes and religious services. Stewart will be able to watch television but only in common areas. However, she can have a Walkman-like radio at her bed. Those radios can be purchased in the commissary.

I wonder if the inmate barber shop allows for hair coloring. At 63, it's doubtful any woman could remain one for 5 months without assistance.

The media is probably already in place at the prison hoping to film her arrival for tomorrow's newscasts. At least with the debate being the top news, it won't get much coverage.

One thing inmates can get is mail. If you'd like to write Martha and send her your support (or magazine subscriptions which she can share with other inmates and earn some friendship points) here's the address. Don't forget to include the Reg. Number:

Ms. Martha Stewart,
Reg. No. 55170-054
FPC Alderson
Glen Ray Road, Box B
Alderson, West Virginia 24910

Martha is a survivor and she's smart. She'll do just fine. But her spirits are bound to suffer on occasion, so mail will help. So, throughout the next five months, we'll be reminding people to send words of encouragement to her. It's the right thing to do.
