BBC TV Airs "Springer the Opera"

BBC, Britiain's public broadcasting channel, aired "Springer The Opera" last night despite receiving more than 40,000 protests, mostly from church groups. Can you imagine how many protests it would generate in America? Did anyone happen to tape it?

Inspired by Springer's trashy American television talk program, it features songs titled "Pregnant By A Transsexual" and "Here Come The Hookers." It is peppered with obscenities and has drawn the ire of Christian groups, outraged at its portrayal of Jesus Christ in a nappy admitting he is a "bit gay."

Then there's this objection which must set a new record for spreading propoganga through deceit:

Lobby group Mediawatch U.K. has attacked the level of swearing. Critics claim the show has 8,000 swear words. That figure is calculated by multiplying the number of obscenities by the 27 members of the chorus who sing the opera's expletive-laden songs.

Oh and I really should say it is very good owing more to a medieval morality tale, wherin Springer is chosen by the devil to die, descend into hell, and is forced to try and resolve the Springeresque dispute between Jesus, Satan, Adam&Eve and Mary. And Jesus isn't in a nappy, he's in a loincloth as per the classical image. He's just played by the same person who portrayed a nappy fetishist in the first half.

It's "Jerry Springer: The Opera" not the musical. [Thanks, fixed it]

I turned off the cable to my home when my teenage daughters started watching this crap. It may be considered entertainment and it may be profitable, but I thought it diminished us all.

Can you imagine how many protests it would generate in America? Some say that our entertainment is the manifestation of the problems in our society. I think that it is equally true that the selectively amplified American media, as constructed by the very concentrated subculture that produces the majority of it, damages society [media is more than journalism and includes entertainment, radio, leisure print, etc.]

"God became a man" - what does that mean? Does it mean "he" was perfect? If he was perfect, then he wasnt really a man - deal with it.

CA - True. It appears that this ?? opera pushes the boundary of good taste, and has no real redeeming values, yet it is toasted and defended. This article from Jonah Goldberg seems very much on target.

Redeeming value aside Jim, I wager you that when Jesus comes back he has a much better chance of going on the Jerry Springer show than he does the 700 Club.
