Alberto Gonzales: Vote Could Come This Week

Alberto Gonzales could be confirmed as Attorney General this week. Sen. Arlen Specter has said it might occur before the inauguration. Sen. Edward Kennedy said Sunday he may vote against him.

He had conversations with the Justice Department; he couldn't remember those," Kennedy said. "He couldn't remember many different kinds of facts. . . . This nominee is the principal architect, it appears, for the development of the changes in the Geneva Convention, and torture. And he has an opportunity in response to these questions to explain it. I don't think he did."

The Washington Post is less than thrilled with Gonzales. Don't miss David Corn's article about Gonzales and his confirmation hearing in LA Weekly.

There's also an article about Judge Michael Chertoff, soon to be chief of Homeland Security, and his days in New Jersey.

Rounding out LA Weekly's coverage is an article, The Bush Theocracy, about Claude Allen, Bush's latest pick for domestic policy advisor.

Gonzales and Bybee are outrages. We can not stand by, or lean by as our elected leaders seem happy to do. "We don't approve of torture." But we'll promote the president's appointed lawyers who lifted the legal barrier in redefining torture. Quaint. Then we go ahead and re-hire the contractor torturers. But still, we don't approve of torture. Not really. wink, wink.

USA - A nation of torturers and torture apologists. And of course the immoral apologists are going "look over there Kennedy". meanwhile by voting this disgrace in we are condoning torture. So now we are like Saddam who had to be overthrown because he tortured and killed. Oh the irony. I never thought we would sink this low

Speaking of confirmations; is anyone else listening to the Rice hearings? This crap is never about a serious interview for the job. It’s just an opportunity for our legislators mug for the audience, ridiculous.

Doesn't anyone else think it a wee bit hypocritical for the U.S. military to convict Charles Graner of all 5 charges against him and for the U.S. Senate to confirm Gonzales?! Until virtually forced to qualify (somewhat) publicly, due to his nom. to Att'y Gen'l, Gonzales did advocate the same kinds of abuses bordering on or leading to torture that Granier was convicted of. "O Pleas!" (as The Abrams Report should be saying). Where are all the lawyers on this one? Come out, come out wherever you are. . . . Yes, of course all Democrats ( not just Edward Kennedy) and Republican members of Spector's committee should be voting against confirming Gonzales. Principles of justice and humanity should come before political expediency and, in this case, I fear that the current notions of what is politically expedient will backfire. This is not the time to experiment with trying to control future Supreme Court nomination hearings. As I've tried to say before, if the Democrats think that they may get a worse Att'y Gen'l pick than Gonzales and that somehow the "record" of this confirmation hearing will prevent him from being successfully nominated for the Supreme Court later during Bush's or another Republican's presidential term of office, they are gambling with all of our futures. It is also time for them not just to "talk the talk" but also to "walk the walk." They need to put their votes where their mouths have been. Otherwise, they lose credibility even with life-long Democrats like me.
