50 Most Loathsome People, 2004 Edition

Ouch. From the 50 Most Loathsome People in America:

#3. You.

You gaze idly at the carnage around you, sigh, and go calmly back to your coffee and your People magazine. You can't stop buying useless crap, though you're drowning in a deepening pool of debt. You think you're an activist because you bitch all day on the internet, but you reelect the same gangsters at a 99% rate. You consider yourself informed because you waste a significant portion of your life watching the same three news stories cycle over and over again on your gargantuan, aerodynamic television set while you eat processed food. You really thought everything would be okay if Kerry won. Not only do you believe in an invisible man who magically farted out the universe, you also excoriate and marginalize those who disagree. You have a poorer understanding of your country's foreign policy history than a third world peasant, but you can't wait to see what Julia Roberts will be wearing at the Oscars. You cheer as Ukrainians challenge an election based on exit poll data, but keep waiting around for someone else to fix your problems. You can't think, you can't organize and you won't act. This is all your fault.

Too funny...#2 on the list, Donald Rumsfeld:

Carries himself in press conferences like a cranky grandfather who is sick of hearing his daughters whine about how he molested them every now and then.

That entire list is WELL worth visiting. In places I had tears in my eyes I was laughing so hard. Favorite moment for me: the entry for Alan Colmes, especially his recommended punishment. Beautiful, I say!

Man, I couldn't have said it any better...#31 Al From. The Beast and I might have different rankings, but the list is pretty comprehensive. I'll enjoy noting here for the rest of you that many of them, especially the entertainment icons, are all creations of the corporate media (meaning more than just news programming). Great link.

A great list for lovers of bile, misanthropy, and cynicism; and #3 is a festival of self loathing. Have at it kids. Lap it up like kittens in a bowl of milk.

How about #51: You make lists about other people. You think Ambrose Bierce made a difference. You pride yourself on misanthropic sanctimony. You're too young to know what it feels like to be trapped. You think even Nader's a sell out. Oh, and you don't have to worry about where the next meal is coming from.

pox on both houses, it's good to know that at least one of us does not put himself above all others. Your empathic plea for philanthropy brings tears to my eyes.

The inclusion of Lehrer was lame; he’s not the partisan stooge these folks would have packed in the NPR ranks. This is a point I have made to my self-styled ‘enlightened’ friends. Cell phones, expensive bicycles, ibooks, cable, portable cd players and ipods, and all the rest. The amount of superfluous crap most people have is astounding. None of it is necessary, just fun and convenient. Don’t get me wrong, I love my stuff and wouldn’t begrudge other folks the same. What kills me is the facade of compassion these same progressive folks put up while driving around in their all-wheel-drive Legacies, toped with a full suspension carbon fiber bicycle. The difference between a subsidized efficiency and that ‘rich’ guy’s home with 10 times the square feet, may seem trivial to the woman who can’t get her child vaccinated or find water that won’t give them deadly diarrhea. In this country we argue over differences that shrink in comparison to the disparity in our poor and the world’s poor. Of course the smallest contributions help; my point is that compassion isn’t comparing your lifestyle to the infamous ‘top 1%’, but rather the bottom 1%. We could all easily live like the immigrant labor in my hometown does; multiple men to a house, cheap meals, absolute frugality; all to send money to the folks that really need it. However, I prefer my stuff and have come to terms with the disgusting nature of my greed. I think others would rather ignore it, or justify it in some fashion. I know, it’s just a little hard to take from some dudes hocking t-shirts and secession.

For a guy who hates Ann Coulter, he sounds an awful lot like her.

justpaul: big difference. This guy doesn't take himself nearly as seriously. Whatever the truths may be found in his list (in my opinion, there are many), in the end his purposes are comedic. Coulter actually believes the drivel she spouts, she thinks she's doing her country a service. Which is the funniest thing of all. Again, I ask you: revisit the entry on Colmes, then re-read them all and enjoy it for what it is. Peace

Deuce: Characteristic smugness from you, with not a lick of actual substance. You're the real misanthrope. What's wrong with recognizing our own complicity in things? Why must you and the vast majority of your partisan ilk (and the vast majority of Dems as well) constantly carry yourselves as though you're the heroes of some movie, just waiting for everyone else to 'get it'? Get over yourself a bit. You know, there are times when a little "self-loathing" is exactly what the doctor ordered. The apathy of the average American is indeed astounding, and I cheerfully throw myself right there into that group. What I find most disgusting about Dubya and his crew, for example, is the same thing that makes your post so repellant: he operates as though he has this unequivocal grip on right and wrong, good and evil. The questions are over as far as he's concerned--everyone else just needs to get on board. You'd think he was a king rather than an elected official--no mistakes, no regrets, full steam ahead, king George!. But in reality, the questions and the room for improvement only come to an end when you go under, my friend. May that be in the far distance for you. Long days and pleasant nights.

Thanks TL, that was funny. Like Tampa Student, I would rank some of them differently but agree that they should be on the list.
