Alberto Gonzales Confirmed as Attorney General

It's official. Alberto Gonzales has been confirmed as our Attorney General

The Senate voted 60-36 to put the first Hispanic ever into the job, with all of the "no" votes coming from Democrats and Democratic-leaning Independent Jim Jeffords of Vermont. Last week, 12 Democrats and Jeffords voted against Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's confirmation.

Reactions:

ACLU (via email, their press release should be up soon)

The newly confirmed attorney general, Alberto Gonzales, should immediately appoint an outside special counsel to investigate and prosecute any criminal acts by civilians in the torture or abuse of detainees by the U.S. government, the American Civil Liberties Union said today.

"Alberto Gonzales must demonstrate his willingness to uphold the oath of office as attorney general by appointing an independent special counsel that will credibly investigate and prosecute the high-level government officials who were responsible for allowing torture and abuse to take place," said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. "The questions senators had about torture will not go away now that Gonzales is confirmed-- a special counsel is the only way we can get to the truth of the matter."

Just another day in the US where the rule of law means nothing, treaties mean nothing, and rank incompetence is no liability

Who were the renegade Democrats that voted for the torturer?

How can the AUSA's take themselves seriously as upholding the law when their boss is a criminal?

So "Gonzalez the Torturer" got more Democratic votes than "Ashcroft the Breast Coverer". Does this mean that the Democrats take the latter more seriously than the former? Seriously though. We will survive. The nation will not crumble. We will not see gulags for political dissidents opened in the next four years. Civil liberties will not be gutted, regardless of what the ACLU says. Then again, even if everything you fear about Gonzalez were to come true, wouldn't this be a good thing since it would tend to push people toward voting for Hillary in 2008?

An AG who doesn't believe in unalienable human rights can never be a good thing justpaul. My country is more important to me than which corrupt, self-serving politician gets elected in '08.
