Simon Rosenberg Drops From DNC Chair Race

Bump and Update: Simon Rosenberg posted the following statement to "fellow Kossaks" at DailyKos:

Today I endorsed Howard Dean to be the next chair of the DNC. While I am disappointed that I did not win, I believe Governor Dean - with help from all of us - will be a good Chairman and will help write a new and better chapter to the already remarkable story of our Party. My full statement is below in the extended entry.
As for you all, thank you. Thank you for your kind words. Thank you for your concern about our Party. Thank you for the money you've raised, the people you've touched, the passion you bring and your fighting spirit that has inspired me every day for so long now. You are doing good my friends. Keep it up. We still have a lot of work to do.

And yes, I will be working hard with you each day to make sure that our Party is stronger and that Governor Dean becomes a successful and effective Chair. Till the next time, S.

Simon Rosenberg has dropped out of the race for DNC Chair. That leaves Howard Dean, Donnie Fowler, who ran the Kerry-Edwards campaign in Michigan, and former Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer.

Will Roemer drop out today as well? He should. The last thing we need is a DNC Chair who is pro-life anti-choice.

Maybe the last thing we need is a pro-lifer like the two of us. After all that's who has been in charge of the party for the last twenty years! Get someone who can led - pro-life or not - just led!

It's not just Roemer's pro-life position. Harry Reid is pro-life, but he's doing a damn good job leading the Senate Democrats. With Roemer, I got the distinct impression he was not interested in reform, but rather in status-quo politics.

The advantage of Howard Dean is that he will pull no punches, and yet he is enough of an established personality in his own right that people won't necessarily identify his every odd pronouncement with the Democratic Party as a whole. At this point, leadership means taking on the Engine of Untruth, more than it means defining a rigid platform.

I think the phrase "pro-life" is wrong. "Anti-choice" is a better description.

Gregg, you are correct. I'm going to change it.

How about changing it to "pro recriminalizaton?" They're either about real policy or they're jerking the public around.

    Or "anti infanticide"

Abortion is not infanticide. A fetus is not an infant. And infant is defined as a child who has been born. Medieval models will not serve us well. Most traditional religious cultures INCLUDING CHRISTIANITY have for most of their time not considered embryos to be human, though they are humaniform in some sense (in the sense of being human embryos). The "quickening," namely that time when the baby's kicking is felt by the mother, for most of the time of those traditions has been considered the entry of the soul, before which time there isn't any, it is just a shell. Quickening occurs, generally, in the fourth month. Most abortions are first trimester, within the first three months. No quickening, traditionally no soul, no problem with Christianity and other religious dogmas until recently (last 50-100 years). You might want to get your head out of the arse of the Medieval age, and join the rest of us out here with the tools we've got to survive as a race. Unless you plan on joining the powderpuffs who 'rise up magically into the night sky,' in which case I recommend a parka. It's g*ddamned cold up there.

If abortion is re-criminalized, I suppose leaving a woman pregnant and hightailing it out of town will be outlawed as well. Right? At some point, the state will have to enforce the law by making women have babies they do not wish to have. What is to be the penalty for illegal sowing of wild oats, heh? After the long parade of injustice and disenfranchisement visited on women throughout the course of history, the one right they clearly possess is the right of owning their womb. Regulate that and we will see true extreme measures taken by the law and order types to insure compliance. We will see maternity by government fiat and by physical force. Sounds less than delightful.

I would be thrilled with Feingold on the ticket. He and Dean are politically close. We are flirting with a real democratic party. Don't know if it is electable, sort of depends on how soon it becomes apparent how bad the neocons truly are. Only 48% of us figured that out by last election deadline.
