Marilyn Musgrave Deemed Vulnerable by GOP

Colorado Representative Marilyn Musgrave has made the Republican's list of House members it considers to be the GOP's 10 most at-risk. The list is part of the Retain Our Majority Program (ROMP.)

ROMP was designed by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) in 1999 to funnel money from legislators hailing from safe seats to those who represent more marginal districts. Typically, a ROMP beneficiary receives upwards of $100,000 from each event and rarely spends less than $2 million defending his or her seat.

Why is the champion of the Gay Marriage Amendment so vulnerable? According to today's Denver Post,

Democrats say that while Musgrave, of Fort Morgan, has gained a national profile pushing a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, she has lost touch with the day-to- day concerns of her constituents in northern Colorado and the Eastern Plains.

She apparently thinks the most important issue is whether gays and lesbians can get married," said Colorado Democratic chairman Chris Gates. "I think people in her district are more concerned about jobs, health care, education and roads."

The full list is:

The 10 members are Reps. Bob Beauprez (Colo.), Mike Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Jim Gerlach (Pa.), Marilyn Musgrave (Colo.), Anne Northup (Ky.), Jon Porter (Nev.), Dave Reichert (Wash.), Rick Renzi (Ariz.), Rob Simmons (Conn.) and Mike Sodrel (Ind.). Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.), who narrowly won his 2004 race, is not on the list.

Democrats have a similar list, called Frontline, but they haven't yet compiled it for 2006.
