Oscar Fashion Open Thread

Hillary Swank looks like she put her dress on backwards. It's up to her throat in the front and down to her a** in the back.

Halle Berry looks perfect. Goregous dress and simple hair and makeup.

Kate Blanchett looks great in yellow, really nice dress.

Leonard DiCaprio in Prada, good choice. Salma Hayak too, excellent.

Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayak both looked beautiful presenting together. Cruz was in Oscar de la Renta yellow, Hayak in black Prada.

Feel free to chime in here.

Natalie Portman looks a little like Hillary Swank, only prettier. Flawless makeup. Her dress is more elegant, but looks too loose for her on the top.

All of Beyonce's outfits were great, especially the black gown and the glittery one.

Barbara Streisand and Julia Roberts' dresses were poor choices. Julia's had an unflattering neckline. Both looked dowdy.

Renee Zellewegger's face looks strange - it might be that awful color hair. Very pretty dress though, and it fits her well.

Hillary Swank looks like she put her dress on backwards. It's up to her throat in the front and down to her a** in the back. But if she put it on the other way, she'd have a Janet Jackson moment, n'est ce pas?

Yes, Halle won a razzie as well as her Oscar. I was very impressed when she actually showed up to accept it. She said something about "I was raised that if you can't lose well, you can't win well" and took it with great humor. Halle is truely a class act.

Wealthy people playing ordinary people in movies. I guess movies are okay if you can afford to pay 10 bucks for a ticket, 10 bucks for popcorn and a coke, and then have to tolerate people yapping on their cell phones while you watch 15 minutes of adverts to see a movie. It's as much fun as watching a moron play the president.

I too was pretty impressed that Berry showed up for the Razzie. For someone who is notorious for having a major ego, to show up and accept the award shows that she is not afraid to take her lumps too.

Gee. Does anything the women wore matter? If not, (and your answer if honest has to be no) why does the plumage of the sex objects there matter? Oops. I think I answered my own question. Gee. I wonder why there are no acting roles for older women?? But I am an older guy in lust with Halle Berry - and in love with Teri Hatcher. Whenever Teri steps on the stage she takes it over. There may be other people there, but no one else matters. But her career was over had Desperate Housewives not chosen her. This garbage about what they wear is a symptom of the problem. It is not good for women that their clothes are news.

Cate Blanchette is an incredible actress & a beauty. I am glad she was recognized for her work --she has been outstanding in every film I've ever seen her in. I am not a big Chris Rock fan --his routine gets a bit old after a while. I have to disagree ( in part) with Rick B's post --appearance matters and not just in Hollywood--whether the emphais is misplaced or not is another story. I am aware that youth sells but all the nominated actresses aren't kids. Annette Bening was nominated for her work in Being Julia, she's an "older woman" & as a thirty something actress, Blanchette isn't considered young by Hollywood standards.

It's also a huge industry pumping a lot of dollars and jobs into the economy. Aside from the the dresses, shoes and jewelry, there are the hair and makeup stylists, personal assistants, limousine drivers, seamstresses, caterers, hoteliers and on and on. And it's fun. There's always a malcontent in the group. Rick B., today it's you.

I have no real interest in the Oscars but was glad to see Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood honored for their work. The former is a fine actor, who doesn't so much act as inhabit and vitalize his roles, and the latter has grown amazingly as a director in his years over 65.

Wow. I had no idea that the concept of "injustice" now includes what rich people wear to the Oscars.

Rick B: I get it--you're much too refined to care about clothes. Gosh, I'm so impressed! And I'm sure that whenever Halle Berry and Terry Hatcher see a man like you--in a flood-pants-and-aloha-shirt ensemble or whatever it is you're wearing--they get all creamy. In fact, I can't imagine what posessed them to dress up for a modest little hoe-down like the Oscars (other than the fact that it's not only the biggest event in their business but probably the biggest garment industry event outside of Fashion Week and the only one that involves showing to the general public). Surely a flour sack and twine would have served?

Narcissism melt-down. I live for the day when somebody gets up on stage and starts singing "How does it feel to be one of the beautiful people..."

Helen Mirren's dress was the prettiest! And she's an old broad - about my age - 59! She was the belle of the ball. Swank's dress was the ugliest thing I have ever seen. But I obviosly don't admire the things Sarcastic Unnammed does. Madsen's sapphire blue was beautiful, so was Winslet's, and Paltrow's pink bodice was ill-fitted again.

Hilary Swank's dress was beautiful. Classy from the frontview and 'fun' from the back, something I would have worn when I was her age, on a good day I might wear it now.......those of you who don't like it prob could never have worn it at all. Do you think those that are 'hanging out in front' look better?? most of the ladies, that I saw looked beautiful and if they liked what they wore, that's all that matters. I would have picked something less form fitting for Star Jones, that would have been more flattering to her new figure, she is proud of how she looks now, and good for her, but when things are too form fittng it makes someone 'not quite svelte,' appear heavier than they truly are....

I totally agree that Helen Mirin's dress and jewelry were fantastic. And Salma Hayek looked really, really sexy. Other than that I was not impressed.

Loved Hilary's dress except the braless look detracted from the elegance of the dress. Back of the dress was awesome. For my money, Annette Bening and Laura Linney looked the best. Liked Cate Blanchett's dress, but pale yellow and pale skin are not a good mix. Compare to yellow dress on Penelope Cruz who looked great in the color.
