Bush Doublespeak on Gangs

Via David Sirota at Think Progress:

CLAIM:
“Taking on gang life will be one part of a broader outreach to at-risk youth, which involves parents and pastors, coaches and community leaders, in programs ranging from literacy to sports.”
- President Bush’s State of the Union promise to focus on ending gang activity, 2/2/05

FACT:
“Law enforcers say Bush budget cuts would hamper anti-gang efforts…[b]ecause it proposed to cut hundreds of millions of dollars in aid to state and local programs that help troubled kids and anti-gang efforts.”
- Knight Ridder, 3/2/05

hey that's nothing, how about this: "The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him." - G.W. Bush, 9/13/01 "I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority." - G.W. Bush, 3/13/02 "I am truly not that concerned about him." - G.W. Bush, repsonding to a question about bin Laden's whereabouts, 3/13/02 (The New American, 4/8/02) "Stopping him is the greatest challenge of our day, and under Mike's leadership we will do everything in our power to meet that challenge." The Bush admn has actually won awards for their proficiency in Doublespeak.
President George W. Bush, for the second year in a row, and his administration have been given the “honor” of receiving the 2004 Doublespeak Award from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Committee on Public Doublespeak. The award is an ironic “tribute” to American public figures who have perpetuated language that is grossly deceptive, evasive, euphemistic, confusing, or self-contradictory. The award was announced at NCTE’s Annual Convention in Indianapolis on Sunday, November 21, at 10:00 a.m.
What won particular accolades was the transmogrification of the term "body bag" into "human remains container" and finally "transfer tube." Kudos.

doublespeak - round these here parts we simply call it lying. rep idealogy: "I was provided with additional input that was radically different from the truth. I assisted in furthering that version." - Colonel Oliver North, from his Iran-Contra testimony what, no cheerleaders yet!

I am really curious why there hasn't been more discussion about the ruling in the Apple case that Shield laws don't apply to bloggers.

Juan Cole has a great ad on his website about photofixing. Watch the black kid's reaction to Laura's visit - it is precious.

This has long been Bush/s MO. Effusive praise for some community-based program one day ahead of its funding-cut announcement. People remember imagery long after words. What RR started, Bush has perfected. It bears repeating: We/re fuc-ked.
