Bobby Fischer Granted Icelandic Citizenship

by TChris

Bobby Fischer, wanted by the U.S. government for engaging in the "unpatriotic" act of playing a chess match in Yugoslavia, may have found a way to avoid prosecution.

After a series of strategic moves worthy of one of his greatest matches, fugitive chess legend Bobby Fischer reached an agreement with Japanese authorities to avoid deportation to the United States on Wednesday. He will instead be released after nine months in prison here and flown to freedom in Iceland as early as Thursday morning, according to sources familiar with the case.

Iceland (described in the linked article as a "chess loving nation") granted Fischer citizenship so that he would have a sanctuary from U.S. prosecution. While Fischer is more than a little daffy and has made some viciously ugly statements, the "crime" of playing chess in a sanctioned country hardly merits prosecution.

Fischer may not have scored a checkmate, as federal authorities are thinking about charging him with tax evasion or some other extraditable offense. Doing so would be a waste of resources. Let Iceland have him; Fischer isn't worth the effort.

I agree. Bringing a chess player to justice isn't terribly high on my list of priorities right now. Of course, I don't work for the Justice Department, but surely there are some terrorists, or something a little more pressing that they could focus their energy on.

I suppose they could find some way to call him an enemy combatant... One more reason to visit Reykjavik (besides the ice hotel)!

Lets see, halliburton and its various parts have done business in Iraq and Iran while they were sanctioned and nothing happened to them. I guess one must have priorities. His real "crime" was speaking out against the US.

Priorities gone wild is right! First they came for the stoner comedians who sell bongs. Then they came for living legends of chess.

Our jails are overflowing with non-violent drug offenders. We have no space for chess masters.

Maybe he could convince Bjork to hide him in her cellar when the brown shirts come looking for him. Her shrieking and confusing/bizarre language should be enough to drive them all away. If not, the 500 lb Pandas should do the trick.

TChris: Are you sure tax evasion is an extraditable offense? I haven't gone and looked it up recently, but I'm pretty sure "revenue offenses" are excluded from the list of crimes covered in most extradition treaties.

Peter, the Justice Department seems to think tax fraud is an extraditable offense. Doesn't it depend on whether it's also an offense in Iceland? That, I don't know the answer to. Apparently, Costa Rica has no extradition treaty with either the United States or Canada for tax offenses. I wonder if any country does. Update: I just found our treaty with Iceland (scroll to page 32 of 110) and on extradition it says,
Extradition. Conventions between the United States and Denmark applicable to Iceland: Treaty for the extradition of fugitives from justice. Signed at Washington January 6, 1902 (32 Stat. 1096; TS 405; 7 Bevans 38). Supplementary treaty for the extradition of criminals. Signed at Washington November 6, 1905 (34 Stat. 2887; TS 449; 7 Bevans 43); entered into force for Iceland February 19, 1906.
The treaty for Denmark was signed in 1972 and under the list of extraditable offenses says, "Offenses relating to willful evasion of taxes and duties."

Hey everyone, Bobby Fischer's nothing to be proud of...his rabid anti-semitism makes him sound like Goebbels... in fact, maybe Iceland gave Goebbels citizenship too! MG

Hey, PPakaJ, I like Iceland and have had a lot of fun there, it's a great place to visit although the population seems to suffer from a collective depression probably because of the long, dark winters. One other thing, never, never ever get into a drinking match with an Icelander because you'll surely lose.
