Friday Gap Blogging

Thanks to The Gap, the parking meters in downtown Denver were free today.

Did anyone notice this in other cities?

That practice is illegal in a lot of communities. PM's are designed to increase turnover and you aren't even allowed to feed the meter twice. Cities like: San Francisco Minneapolis Iowa City The theory being that the city loses $ because people rarely use their whole time before the next person comes along and they also lose money thru no fines. It's illegal in a lot of places to use someone else's time. I remember a clown that was arrested for feeding other people's meters. Did anyone notice this in other cities? I guess my short answer was "No."

The absurdity of it! Dropping coins into meters every half-hour or so. No wonder people are leaving the cities in droves.

OK... who in the city government negotiated this deal with the GAP? How much did the GAP pay the city and county? Who performed the number-crunching to determine how much the GAP should pay for lost meter violations, worker wages, etc. Has the GAP contributed to city political campaigns, and does this amount to political gift? And btw, Horse, people are moving INTO cities in droves, all across the country. Read the census. And the next time you summon up the courage to visit the scary city, bring your change, or better yet, take public transporation.

Luckily the GAP can afford to be so generous because they paid so little to have children make their products. GAP is also a very RED company donating plenty of money to the Cons.

Then I think you ought to try to get your hand under the cover and feed the meter anyway

Thanks to the GAP, half the kids in America are walking around in camoflage wear as a fashion statement. I refuse to shop there. When my son turns 18 he can join the army and wear all the camoflage he wants. But they're not getting him one second sooner unless OBL arrives in Boston Harbor and starts up the Charles.

Mfox, which would you rather your son be wearing: Camoflage (which, BTW, I have never seen at Gap) or Basketball Jerseys with Jeans that are 3 times too large? I know, I know... tough question...

“people are moving INTO cities in droves, all across the country” Thank god. “they paid so little to have children make their products” Hear, hear; let’s get these urchins back on the street where they belong, begging and turning tricks. Really, could it be any different than working for this evil multinational? “Thanks to the GAP, half the kids in America are walking around in camoflage wear as a fashion statement.” GAP sells what folks want to buy. It would be more appropriate to thank your kid's friends for what GAP stocks.

No free metered parking in my town, today. But some bank robbers were kind enough to leave $10,000 in the next parking space over from where my wife and I parked. If only the GAP would do that - as it was, I felt obliged to notify the police.

Uhhh, no. GAP, like Blockbuster, like most radio stations, sells what their 'buyer', 'programing service' or 'marketing exec' wants to move. It has nothing to do with what the consumer wants. It is such a stupid and obvious debating trick to hold up one reality and one hyperbole and declare them equal. The alternative to sweatshops isn't sex trade. We managed to get rid of child labor in this country and survived just fine. The alternative is to not give money to companies and countries that do this. This isn't a free market, this is slavery.

That is funny, and great for this time of the year, tax anyone! or as the government would say you can't take it with you, or keep it.

“Uhhh, no. GAP, like Blockbuster, like most radio stations, sells what their 'buyer', 'programing service' or 'marketing exec' wants to move.” You couldn’t be more wrong; I suppose you would buy a terd if it came in a GAP bag? Kmart would love to indulge in this fantasy as well, it could save them from chapter 11; they only need a marketer, right? “We managed to get rid of child labor in this country and survived just fine.” Child labor laws were only passed in the US when it was an economically viable proposition. Where it wasn’t, rural farms, etc., the laws were systematically ignored. Even today children can work on family farms at any age. There are many developing countries for which reforming child labor isn’t an option. UNICEF regarding possible import bans; "it is difficult to find much that is praiseworthy, from the standpoint of a child-centered approach to child work, in a unilateral import ban". I understand that it isn’t strictly an either/or proposition between garment work and prostitution but for many street children it is. Again, UNICEF on the Bangladeshi garment industry; "less hazardous, more financially lucrative, and with more prospects for advancement than almost all other forms of employment open to children." And since we are discussing GAP, last year they published the first of an annual report on the status of child labor by their garment suppliers. GAP will not purchase from suppliers who employ children under 14 and subsequent to the report dropped several suppliers. “The alternative is to not give money to companies and countries that do this. This isn't a free market, this is slavery.” I agree that the sale of slave made products should be outlawed in the US. However, simply banning any garment made by a child is unhelpful. We need to distinguish between good/bad working conditions for child labor and outright slavery.

Pigwiggle, I would argue that my son's friends have no freaking idea what camoflage is and that an adult wave of hawkishness drives this particular market (my five year old enjoys the luxury of having his mother buy his clothes and food rather than him making clothes to buy his food) I'm just saying that I'm exercising my right not to purchase these and I wish more consumers would feel the same way (they don't, if you can believe it - even in The Peoples Republic of Cambridge) Horse - You probably didn't see the camoflage wear because you were looking at adult fashions Check out GAP KIDS.

The city still had the 2 hour limit in place to keep up the turnover. It's illegal to feed the meters in Denver as well after the posted time limit. Horse: Our very capable pro-business mayor, Democrat John Hickenlooper (or "J-loop" as he is lovingly known), won the job in part by promising to lower the parking meter rates downtown. Contrary to popular Republican belief, Democrats and liberals are not anti-business. We just believe that the way to promote a successful economy is to foster equality and fairness, make work more fun, and make our cities and towns nice places to live. J-loop cites The Rise of the Creative Class as his personal philosophy for creating a booming economy. There is a reason why the engine of the new economy is located in cities run by Democrats like Seattle, San Francisco and Denver (telecom capital of the world). We believe that the way to a successful economy is by enriching the entire population and the experience of life, and reject the notion that enriching only the few thousand richest people will somehow trickle down to those of us who work for a living.
